Didn't Jimbo Fisher coach under Saban?

jury is still out on Jimbo...Jimbo had the advantage of being a coach in waiting so it was an easier transition.

He hasn't been an "elite" coach but he certainly hasn't been a bad one.

I can't think of one. They keep trying to hire his disciples thinking it'll be the same but it's not. Just like with people hiring Belicheck assistants. They just don't pan out.

Some people consider Saban as part of the Belicheck tree.

Auburn fans think that somehow Saban magically curses his coaches and therefore they can never be successful.

It's the dumbest I've ever heard. Everyone loves the Parcells tree, but many of his "disciples" haven't worked out. Does that mean you can never hire any of them?

Are you really going to avoid making a good hire because he happened to work for Saban at one point?

Dont know if your serious, but I dont want to someone to take over after Saban who has no head coach experience. We've had some bad luck with that. I'd like to see Smart go somewhere and get some experience before he comes back.

That's what I think he will have to do. He will have to go to a smaller program for 2 or 3 years and prove himself before a big school will give him the keys. He might get a job at a lower tier SEC school like a Kentucky or Vandy at best.

Need someone with head coaching experience. Now is not the time for an experiment with an assistant.

Strong would be a great hire.

Smart needs to prove himself without Saban first.

Hiring Kirby would be like Auburn hiring Garrick Mcgee,(Petrino disciple), If Arkansas still had BMFP.

Charlie strong is the last option but I would still feel comfortable having him coach.

ETA it's

HC: Gruden
DC: Strong
OC: who cares

Strong is going to leave a HC job to be the Arky DC?

Damn.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Strong is not a last option.

With a list like what you posted, you should probably post less.

I love Kirby Smart as our DC. I think he'll make a good head coach some day, but if I'm Arky, there's no way in hell that I'm hiring a guy who doesn't have a proven track record as a head coach. This hire is far too critical. Make a bad hire here, and you're regulated to a decade of mediocrity and will have no chance of competing for the SEC West for a long time to come. I'd throw the bank at Strong if I was your AD. I really don't think you'll be able to do better than him.

yes bc I'm completely serious about gruden coaching at Arkansas and Strong coming just to be a DC

So Strong won't come to coach at Arkansas if we offer him much more money than he's making at Louisville to coach in the state he grew up in?

It seems pretty obvious that he would come if we offered him.

Who ever it is better be able to recruit. Arkansas is like Tenn it's not a "popular" choice with todays recruits.

They should go with a former NFL guy or someone like Dabo Swinney. The guy can flat out recruit.

What great head coaches have fallen out of the Saban tree? Serious question.

Well, he has 3 former assistants who are currently the HC of the #4, #14, and #21 teams in the country. Would you like to have a team ranked in any of those spots right now?

You seem to like to make up rules as we go.

Just go ahead and tell us who is eligible for consideration on Saban's tree.

I like Strong and he was someone I wanted us to hire last off season.

He knows the SEC. He knows how to recruit. He has HC experience and is turning around UL nicely.

Seriously, the resume of Strong vs Smart is really not comparable.
Smart is a complete question mark and there is really nothing to indicate he would or wouldn't make a good HC.

Honestly though, I think Arkansas would do better to get an offensive minded coach. It is going to take a good amount of years to become a winner with a defensive team at Arkansas due to talent, and thats assuming Arkansas can get the talent necessary.
Thats another thing, the hogs rely on TX recruiting and the fact of the matter is that after A&M, Texas, OU, LSU, OSU, and all the other schools that recruit here, there is just not much left on the defensive side of the ball.

I think Briles would be a much better hire and would give you a solid "IN" for Tx recruiting.

Jon Gruden has almost no experience in the college game. His last stint coaching college was over 20 years ago as a wide receivers coach at Pittsburg in 1991. It's not his coaching that I question - it's his experience in recruiting. If this is the hire the Razorbacks better laydown some big bucks on proven college assistants.
