Not reading the other posts before I post this, but my memory was that after a particular mediocre season, he was apparently "on the plane" to Nebraska, (which I now believe was an outright lie) and he was given a pass.
The guy got a literal "two-year pass", which is permission to have back-to-back losing seasons.
He was entrenched here like nobody's business. The guy is a politician. Imagine how Tim Brando sucks Nutt's cock about everything. Then extrapolate that to your local media. That's how it was here. A local media guy (who still works for the U of A) said the program would be "set back 10 years if Nutt leaves". No, I am not kidding.
Our sports media never even BARELY criticized the guy.
At least Ole Miss has writers with the cajones to question the guy in year 4.
frick, I feel dirty even posting about that hellish period of Arkansas football.

That's kind of been the sports media culture in Arkansas forever. Since the Hogs are the only major program in the state, and the success of the Hogs is seen as the success of the entire state and everybody in it, it is unpatriotic for the sports writers to say ANYTHING critical of the coach or program. Nobody in the media had anything bad to say about Nutt until he was obviously on the way out, then there was a rash of "well, I knew all along," and "we could have told you so." The advantage Mississippi has in that regard is that competing programs give the sports media a lot more freedom to be critical.
So maybe, just maybe, we can get rid of his sorry arse faster than you guys did.

I believe the Ole Miss job became Nutt's preferred job. At Ole Miss, he had a chance to not make a lot of the same mistakes, and in some ways he hasn't, but with the exception of the first 2 years, he hasn't had the type of player and talent he needs to be really successful. I think Masoli helped a lot but it was only for one year and the defense was still lacking.
I'm fairly sure that had not Matt Jones come along in '01, Nutt would not have won more than a couple or three games that year.
To this day, a pseudo-case could be made for paying Matt Jones a percentage of Nutt's salary, as a royalty.

Only in the most literal/technical sense. The guy hooked up with OM before the UA administration could fire him. Actually, my recollection of the events is that Chancellor John White and outgiong AD Frank Broyles were the last two people in the state who liked/respected the guy. I believe if it were left up to them, he would still be at Arkansas. However, pressure had grown from fans and the boosters who HAD to be obeyed ($$), and they could no longer keep him. In order to help their buddy save face, White and Broyles encouraged him to seek the OM job. They went so far as to relieve him from any buyout that was in his contract should he leave Arkansas for another job. Had he not been hired at OM (or at Baylor which was also open at the time), he would have been fired. His cronies were just doing him a solid. In the mean time, it sure looked like White and Broyles were screwing Arkansas by not giving him a "Not in the SEC West" clause as a condition for releasing him from his buyout. Now it appears that they may have been helping the Hogs' long term interests, because today we look at OM as a program and a fan base and see ALL of the same things that were plaguing Arkansas 5 years ago. Stagnant offense. Trite quips from a clueless coach. Fractured fan base. Nutt Huggers v Haters. Boone (Broyles) supporters vs haters. etc... Once you and your fan base have reached this point, there is no other choice but to fire the guy. You're not going to get over it with him there. But watch yourselves, because i suspect Sexton will get Nutt out of Oxford and into another deal (on the Southern Miss/Memphis State level) before he has a chance to be fired.

Its true that the sports media culture was like that forever at Arkansas. Nutt understood and capitalized on it by granting access based on a "who likes me" basis. Broyles established that culture, and with Broyles gone, its also gone.
One of the major shocks of having Petrino here is that he doesn't work the media. He doesn't politic or play favorites. He is focused on his team and the culture of the athletic department, period. Media to Petrino is a distraction, not something to be managed for your career benefit. Nutt saw it as the latter. He still does.
Petrino is still a shock to the system to a lot of old-school media guys in Arkansas. There has been more open criticism of Petrino by Arkansas media members in the four years he has been here than there was with Nutt the entire time he was here. A lot more.
But the fanbase almost universally loves Petrino.

if anyone actually believes nutt left on his own they really don't know shite about what was going on.
Nutt is a clown and the only reason he stayed at ark as long as he did was because he had buddies in all the right places. this is not the case at OM and it will be the reason he's gone after year 4 instead of year 10.
i will never forget tim brando giving hog fans hell in 08 about getting rid of nutt. the media was ready to crown nutt as the best coach ever during 2008 while at the same time shitting on bobby p every chance they could get. it was completely obvious to anyone with any sense though that nutt left ark and shambles and petrino was having to do a clean up job of epic proportions. i knew the day would come when brando would have egg on his face for those comments...i just didn't think it would come so quickly.

Did you hear Brando's comments Saturday during the Ole Miss game? He was throwing Nutt directly under the bus. Bout time.
This might be the best post from an LSU fan ever by the way.

Nutt was told the week before the Tennessee game in his last year that he wouldn't be brought back at Arkansas.
If you knew Nutt, you could really tell something was up. He is an emotional coach and he looked like his dog died on the sidelines that day as the team came out as flat as any team has ever come out and got pounded 38-7 by a pretty mediocre Tennessee team.

I think this is exactly right… My dad is a huge Arkansas fan so they have always been my second favorite team. I remember Nutt at Arkansas and you can go back and watch him in some old games and he had a lot more emotion and fire to him during those games.
Look at him now at OM and he just looks defeated and dejected. I don't think he has much left in him. This weekend against Georgia will show if he still has some fight or if he just has given up.
