He didn't have to seek another HC job. He could have found something though.
What he did was took an unpaid position with the Patriots. At that point, he and the Patriots were taking advantage of his buyout and abusing the terms.

Per the terms of his contract Bert was required to look for a job of appropriate stature. Where people like the OP get lost is that he was not required to land such a job, but he was required to make an effort to do so.
In other words if Bert had bothered to apply to pretty much any position out there and sent the paperwork proving so to Arkansas we'd still be on hock for him. He didn't even have to half arse an attempt to find work. A quarter assed attempt would have fulfilled the terms of his contract.
Bert was too lazy to do the bare minimum of what he needed to do to stay on the gravy train.
