Lulz. They did it because the program was hemorrahaging cash. They called the AD in and gave him two years to get out of the red and he didn't do shite. When they axed it, alums finally decided to pony up money to make it solvent. You're just buying the spin from the Auburn half of the fanbase.
I'm one of those people who is a fan of more than one school, and am probably the only person on this board who has attended UAB football games.

And the fact that more than half of their student body comes from out of state, I bet the animosity is high. Never looked at it this way.
So you’re telling me folks that went to UAH also dislike UA??
Damn I always figured the whole state was either roll tide or war eagle.

Tuscaloosa treats the other campuses like absolute dog shite.
This is laughable. Have you seen the explosive growth at UAB and the billion dollars worth of new construction? The BOT even bought up Birmingham city streets to build a fricking quad.
Auburn fans are stupid.

UGA prof
Then dont take my word for it. This guy is a UGA professor and UAB alum that lays out all the history in detail:

U know how I know u are FOS?
Not everyone in Birmingham is UAB fans. Not even close. Not remotely close.
Name me one recruit Bama lost to UAB much less losing "too many". Again, so far off base it's not even halfway rational. Uabs program was shut down due to the university of Alabama having to subsidize it. If it isn't supporting itself in 5 years it will be shut down again. This time, there won't be a defibulator provided by auburn handy.
All UAB fans HATE, HATE, HATE Alabama and most are auburn fans. The hate is fierce because most started out auburn fans. Auburn orchestrated and helped lead the UAB revival for.....God only knows why. It's not helping them. Hasn't hurt us but UAB needs to support itself, like troy or USA.
To answer your question everybody is an Alabama or auburn fan regardless of where they went to jax state, troy, wherever. UAB is right now, not making this up, trying to implement in the stadium to be built, watching areas so fans at their game can go to one of these watch areas to watch the Bama or auburn game. Yes, while at the UAB game. Bill Clark says he wants to have Bama and auburn fans at their games and this will entice that. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is a program that has NO BUSINESS being a D1 football program.

I know the work of John Knox well. The guy is a moron. He is the classic fan of another school (now two) who disguises his bias behind a title of professor.
His specialty is geography, btw, and he pretends to be an atmospheric scientist in his downtime, despite having no training or real knowledge of the subject matter.
Christ, he even points out how the BOT smacked down the UA president's ideas to favor the Tuscaloosa campus.
Goddamn, you Auburn people are stupid.
Also, your article has nothing to do with the BOT turning UAB into a world class university.

Ok so I just see a bunch of ad hominem and no refutation of what he says.

My fandom is a little weird. I grew up an Auburn fan, but attended South Alabama before they had a football team. Most students wore either AU or UA gear on campus...I'm not sure how much has changed. I ended up transferring to Bama after my sophomore year though.

I was a fan of Troy for one game.

So is this common? Or will you get stared at like you’re crazy?

Similarly, about 90% of Southern Miss alum/fans also claim an SEC school. Usually Alabama or LSU.
It's not uncommon to see vehicles with a USM sticker also have an SEC school sticker.
I guess it just means more.

It was very common when I was there about 11 years ago. I do remember the president and AD being pissed about it. The culture may have changed a bit since they have their own football team.

People go to UAB, other than the renowned medical school, because they couldn't get into either Alabama or Auburn.
I can't say they really have many fans of their own. There is probably a small nucleus of UAB basketball fans leftover from the Gene Bartow days.
As far as students of the smaller state schools being fans of one or the other SEC schools here, it probably is in line with those who did not go to any college.

See, there is Absolutely nothing wrong with that!
Like a previous poster stated. It’s good to have one G5 and one P5. It just gives you more football. I’m thinking about picking up a random G5 team that I have no ties to.

Four schools are moving into brand new facilities this month alone
More than a dozen new buildings, and a new quad in the last five or so years. Parking decks everywhere. Dramatic expansion of the UABSOM to both the UA and UAH campuses to teach new doctors. Expansion of the UAHS. Thanks, BOT.
