Every big conference is and has been looking at conference only play. That has always been a contingency plan.

They are losing money by not having those games.
The P5 pays those people to come to them where they can sell tickets and concessions and make a couple million a game. If no fans in the stands then they are paying a team a million dollars with no possibility to make that money back.
They are basically hedging their bets to where if they have fans in the stands great but if not they can still collect all the tv money without having to shell out money to fill a schedule.

if LSU has to pay Nicholls, Rice and UTSA $4mil-ish total to come play in front of an empty stadium, how is that beneficial, financially?
Exactly!
The big schools can't and won't say it, but THAT'S the reason why they are cancelling the non-conf. games. They want out of those big rent-a-win contracts that they won't be able to offset with a packed home stadium. It's not "safer" for Maryland to avoid a 200 mile trip to play West Virginia while keeping a 700 mile trip to play Northwestern on the books.
This decision (and the inevitable decision of the other power conferences) is going to SIGNIFICANTLY hurt the budget of smaller schools, so I guarantee that contractual battle is going to litigation eventually...if not very soon.
Locally, LSU hates having to give up that Texas game this year. But what they hate even MORE is thought of having to play that game in front of a 1/2 full Tiger Stadium. That would mean (though no fault of their own) Texas would have realized ALL the financial benefits of that agreement (except a win), while LSU would have gotten virtually no financial benefit of the deal.

That feeling when you knew they were pretending they were going to play a full season all along.
Freakin sucks

looking at the future schedule now though....when would we make that game up with Texas? Unfortunately it looks like we will get 0 financial benefit from it

I'm certain covid is code for climate change. The green new steal is being forced down our throats under the guise of health and safety

Chalk it up to yet ANOTHER consequence of the extreme short-sighted thinking of the last 4 months (and counting).

The problem is in bold. There are two kinds of ignorant people; the kind who know they are ignorant, and the kind who blabber about stuff in spite of being ignorant. You are the latter kind.
The reason for going to an all conference schedule is to reduce the scheduling complexity so that they can reschedule as postponements happen. These guys who lead the conferences are a lot smarter than you are, and they have a lot more information.

When looking at that guy (Stankey) does anything at all say “leader” to you?
Hardly.
Hardly.
