I don't think he was being racist....just very ignorant in how that word is viewed. Should he be punished in some fashion, probably yes because it was completely inappropriate in any public forum!

The Old Testament condones the murder of homosexuals as well as many other people by the word of God, but luckily we live in a world where such archaic laws don't trump reason

And there is where you are wrong. The law that was originally passed was basically the same as the federal law the Clinton admn passed 20 odd years ago. The Dems were fine with it then. 19 other states have passed basically the same law on the state level. This law wasn't about discriminating against gays but more an outlet where Christians could state their cases on religious grounds, and even then, it wasn't guaranteed.
The point I'm making is there are examples where the minority can be and is oppressive over the majority.
