Alabama's defense will not be great unlike what many think.

It will be improved slightly.
Pete Golden is a below average coach. Winning the title saved his job plus nobody else would hire him at an equal or better job. Talk of this being like the great defenses of the past is laughable.

Dang, I sure wish we could be as good as the Ole Miss defense.

Our defense sucks. But we don't tell people it will be the 1992 Alabama like Bama fans are.

Question for the Bammers, why is Golden your defensive coordinator? It's a very odd situation.

Pete Golden was my Dad’s student at Delta State. He was an average student as well.

I don’t think anyone expects a defense to play at the elite levels we saw early in Saban’s tenure. The schemes, game plans, and even the game itself has changed too much to see that level of dominance on the defensive side of the ball anymore. But, I do think a lot of Bama fans expect this to easily be the best defensive unit in several years. It’s a good mixture of talent and experience, and the depth that’s been missing for several years shouldn’t be as big of an issue, assuming there aren’t many major injuries. Pete Golding is still the DC, but I think it’s reasonable for Bama fans to have high expectations for this year’s D, relatively speaking.

Here is what I learned from last year.Bama's defense needs spring practice and reps as much as its offense. First of all, Saban runs the defense, let's get this straight. His blitz packages and coverage disguises are complicated and the defense struggled early last year. Guys out of position and players struggling to make the correct calls pre-snap.(not naming any names, or calling out Moses). But as the season went along and the defense got more snaps, they improved. By the end of the year they were nasty. Now the days of 92 or even the 2011 style defense are over. Rules have changed and favor offenses more, as well as the evolution of the game, but to beat Bama one must score at least 40 and I don't think anybody will be able to do that on this defense.

Op a slight improvement means they go from the 13th best D last year to a top 10 D this year which another natty

We’ll know by the end of the year if Pete Golding is a man living above his station. This is Golding’s put-up-or-shut-up year without a doubt. 2019 had a debilitating injury affliction on defense. 2020 was a younger unit that didn’t get a real off-season. Defense was down big time across the board in 2020.
Not looking like he’s going to have an alibi this year if the production isn’t there.

You don't expect national championships either. Remind me again, why are you trying to have this conversation?

Maybe, I think they need this unit to be like Clemson’s 2018 defense if they’re going to win a title. Even that comp isn’t like the early Saban defenses that allowed over 20 points maybe once or twice in an entire season. Clemson gave up some yards and points at times but they nutted up and got stops when needed in their down games (but mostly dominated people).

Who is saying that? Nobody. The defense should be better than it has been because it’s been absolute dog shite except the last half of last season, but it’s 2021. Nobody is expecting defenses of the past

It’s really not. Injuries and young players played a huge part of it. Not to mention it’s 2021 like I said before. And the defense has improved every year he’s been here. Saban isn’t a god but he’s usually right, and I expect the defense to take a step up again and be top 10 this year. On top of his recruiting not much more you can ask IMO (if you aren’t unrealistic)

I think any Defense in the SEC is only as good as the competition at QB. Good QBs tear the league apart. How many good QBs this year?

I would be willing to bet money that Ole Miss doesn't score over 25 points against Bama this year.

Oh look, yet another person who doesn't understand the DC at Alabama runs Saban's defense.

Because he's good at his job and makes excellent adjustments.
