I dont know how to defend them at this point.

Academics are the reason for existing.

The acceptance rate must be in the 90's.

The Mississippi schools are handcuffed through civil rights laws. They cannot be discriminatory in their admissions by design.

Those ranking are about the worse crap in the world. It is all self reported BS and you have to pay to submit the information.

If you want a ranking of actual academic quality you need to look at the Carnegie Classification of the university. For LSU it is a Doctoral Universities: Highest Research Activity. Just like all the other R1 institutions in the SEC. If you are R1 you have achieved the highest level of academic standards for a university. All R1 are viewed as equal from the academic criteria. Some have better name recognition than others, but that is just a subjective standard.

My wife's epidural anesthesiologist was an UGA grad. We were both nervous as hell having someone inject something into her spine.

But he did a fine job. Good school.

UA was ranked higher than Auburn in almost every USNWR rankings from around 2007 till a couple of years ago. USNWR changes its criteria every year. UA suffers from not being as big of a research university as other major flagships, which impacts its peer reputation score, a huge component of the overall ranking. However, it is now focusing on growing its research program and grad programs. I never thought UA Engineering would be as big as Auburn's Engineering College, but it now is and UA Engineering actually admits a higher caliber freshman than Auburn Engineering judging by avg ACT scores. Thus, I fully expect it to increase in prestige over the next decade.

Also, UA attracts a larger number of top students (ACT of 33 or higher) than any other SEC School, save Texas A&M. Before you get your panties in a wad, I admit that it also attracts more of the lower tier students (ACT of 22 or lower), than most other SEC schools. As of last Fall, UA's middle 50% freshman class had an ACT range of 23-32, Auburn's middle 50% had an ACT of 24-30.

How predictable.

Our LSU team beat A&M in Quiz Bowl this past season, but tbqh Florida, Alabama, and Auburn in that order are the dominant quiz bowl powers in the SEC.

Mississippi AND other Southern states with very high Black percentages are in a tough situation regarding efforts to be more selective. If they are more selective, they can catch hell. But even upper income Blacks have a lower AVERAGE SAT than lower income Whites. Google it if you doubt me. Not arguing WHY, just stating a fact. It is easy to embrace "diversity" when your population is not so diverse.
