Ranking college football’s biggest underachievers of all time: Why Texas A&M is No. 1
1. Texas A&M
Why they belong: This isn’t recency bias. The Aggies rank no lower than 17th in our potential-related statistics but lack high-end results. Texas A&M has only six ranked finishes this century and last won its conference in 1998. The Aggies squandered one of the best recruiting classes ever under Fisher and, like Stanford, have connections to six Hall of Fame coaches (including Bear Bryant and Gene Stallings, who both won it all at Alabama). The Aggies, however, have only one national title in the modern era (1939).
Yeah, but: Texas A&M’s fertile recruiting footprint is also crowded because the Aggies have had to fight nearby powers like Texas and LSU. Even with its hiccups, Texas A&M is still a top-20 historical program, so the floor has been relatively high.
Final thought: On paper, Texas A&M should be at least the second-best program on our list (alongside Florida). Yet the Aggies have fewer ranked finishes than UCLA, a worse bowl record than Rice and a winning percentage (.605) in the same neighborhood as Arizona State and Utah. Barring a turnaround, A&M will go from preseason top 25 to unranked for the 18th time. But good news, Aggies: You finally made the top of one set of rankings.

Texas A&M is a true hero for giving away games to other teams. Thank you! Congrats for your kindness!

It's not nearly as bad as your track record of getting laid.

If Elko had as much passion coaching as he does against message boards, he might succeed more on the field
