You just need Wise to put the swag in your defense.

Wise is a tool, he also celebrated after a 3 yard gain by Manziel

We could go to a 5 3 4 defense. That would help tremendously
I don't think that would work... that defense gets flagged a lot.

Show me a HUNH, high-scoring offense that has ever had a good defense.

True, but also show me an SEC defense with a WR playing linebacker that has had any manner of success.
We need two more recruiting classes before we are SEC ready. The Offense is just keeping us in games right now.

How Wise was not given an Unsportsmanlike on that is mind boggling. It's not the NFL. Not that A&M needed it to spank the Piggies but it would have been hilarious if after the one time they finally got to JFF they got flagged.
Oh, and Dat Nguyen may be an answer but he would be a very bad answer. Love Dat but he was not a good coach who didn't like recruiting.
If we are hiring old time Aggie LB's to coach we should go get Johnny Holland.

Spaceball:
When challenging the intelligence of another poster, you should probably learn to spell the insult that you are attempting to hurl.
"Moran?" I suspect that you were attempting to call me a "moron."
My God, who admitted this troglodyte to my beloved University?

Setting Spaceball aside (really the only appropriate treatment for him), some of the other posters make interesting points.
First, Nguyen never said that he did not like recruiting in general. What he said was that he did not like recruiting in an environment where EVERYONE was violating the NCAA recruiting rules, meaning that he had to (a) also break the rules or (b) lose-out to the malfeasors. You simply MUST like a guy who actually hates to break the rules.
Second, the harsh evaluations of his coaching career are not justified.
Nguyen coached three years at the pro level, and the Cowboys were fairly solid those years, making the playoffs twice: 2007 (13-3), 2008 (9-7), & 2009 (11-5). The linebacker position must not have been TOO bad.
Nguyen coached only two years at the college level. Let's look at those years. Most of the complaint seem to apply to his recruiting. Sherman did not hire Nguyen at TAMU until February of 2010. Thus, Nguyen clearly had no role in recruiting the Fall 2010 freshman class.
He coached the 2010 season, so he clearly played a role in recruiting the Fall 2011 freshmen. Who were the linebackers in that class?
Donnie Baggs, junior. Now a starter.
Brandon Alexander (JuCo xfer), red-shirt senior. Now starting on defensive line.
Steven Jenkins (JuCo xfer), senior. Now a starter.
Tyrell Taylor, junior. Playing behind sophomore Obioha (see below).
Shaun Ward, junior. Playing behind Baggs (see above).
I will grant you the argument that this group is not doing earth-shattering work.
Nguyen also coached the 2011 season, but Sumlin made it clear that he would not be invited back immediately after Sumlin was hired in early December. Thus, Nguyen probably had no significant role as to the Fall 2012 freshmen. However, let's say that he did have a role. What linebackers did TAMU sign that year? Not many, because the roster included tons of LBs.
Jordan Richmond. He is now gone, apparently due to a drug arrest at the end of last season.
Julien Obioha, sophomore. Lettered 2012 as a freshman. Starting now as a sophomore.
Tyrone Tyrell, redshirt freshman. Backup to Obioha (see above)
Based upon this limited info, it is rather difficult to evaluate Nguyen's performance in recruiting as a college coach, don't you think?

No I don't. I like a guy who WINS. If we just wanted to lose and raise good kids we could have kept Sherman and stayed in the Big 12.

Its not us. If he was a good LB coach, SOMEONE other than his alma mater would have given him a second shot and he would not be doing radio now.

First of all, coaches don't just recruit their position.
But if you want to give Dat credit for this class then let me point out that NONE of these players were four or five stars, and that lineup is EXACT reason we are lacking defensive studs today to compete at an elite level. Until Sumlin came we didn't recruit a decent defensive class since RC, and he did that by cutting dead weight like Dat.
Here is who Dat targeted in 2011:

Not only did he not get any of them, none were really elite prospects because HE HAD GIVEN UP RECRUITING ELITES by then.
Dat is a legend and he is welcome in every suite, just keep him off the staff.

Baggs lost his job to a true freshman, Alexander hasn't done anything, the Taylor brothers have been nonfactors, and Shaun Ward transferred prior to the start of the season.

Hank, moran is a nicer way of calling you stupid. I didn't want to be rude.
But IMO, your idea of what would fix our defense is ridiculous. We ran a 3-4 under Sherman, Dat coached ILB while Toth coached OLB. The defense was DeRuyters and Toth was his understudy. Dat didnt do shite for the gameplan. So if you think we should have reatined a coach fine, but if you knew anything the coach we're missing most is NIck Toth.
Dat was also a shite recruiter, a total zero. In 2 years he recruited zero players of significance. He was a liability and thats why he was shown the door.
He has NFL experience, College experience and is now on the radio in San Antonio, doesnt that tell you something?
The problems we are having on defense revolve partly around the fact that Nguyen was a coach at A&M in the first place, we didn't recruit well enough during the Sherman years.

The only true answer is time... the young fish need to grow up. Our defense is small compared to the rest of the SEC because they haven't even been playing a full season in college yet. The upperclassmen are basically untalented and many have lost their jobs to true fish. Our best pass rusher looks like a bean pole for goodness sakes.
It will take a few more years of recruiting SEC talent. Snyder is NOT the problem.
