Sumlin was a linebacker, therefore A&M will inevitably have a good defense.

I've met Sumlin on several occasions, and there can be no challenge to the assertion that he is somewhat self-absorbed.

But I HOPE that he did not fail to make a good hire as a linebacker coach solely because he didn't want someone on the staff who knows that job better than him.

Confidence comes off that way sometimes.

That is preposterous.

Please desist.

With that being said, every high school linebacker in the country is familiar with Dat Nguyen, and he was one of the smartest linebackers ever to play the game.

Well they didn't the first time he was a coach for us

If he was a good coach then someone else would have hired him to do that. Our LBs looked terrible under him and he whiffed on every player he recruited.

Good luck to his talk radio career but he is done coaching at a high level.

Aggie Hank, I think your logic is based on the fact that because Dat was a great linebacker, he would be a great linebacker coach. But Dat has said in interviews that he did not enjoy recruiting, and that is a huge part of being a college ooach. The problem with our defense is from a lack of recruiting quality defensive personnel by the Sherman staff. I have faith that Sumlin and Hagen (LB coach) will right the ship in the next year or two when the talent is there and developed.

Sumlin is dealing with young guys. Sherman obviously recruited very well on offense and we had a tremendous offense under him. We reloaded on offensive mostly with players he recruited and brought in. The offensive cupboard was far from bare when Sumlin arrived.

Defense is totally different. Sumlin has stated that we are having to play young guys on defense that haven't matured yet. Some of them he expects to put on 15 to 20 pounds by next year. Sumlin recruited well for defense last year and is doing well again. Ags just don't have the physical ability we need on defensive line of scrimmage. Tough to stop the run, tough to pressure the QB, etc.. etc... etc... Good D starts at the line of scrimmage in the SEC and NOT at linebacker. We need better more physical play on LOS. We need upgrades at LB... yes, absolutely. We need bigger faster Dlineman in the worst way.
