He may work out, but this is a gamble. They didn’t get the interest they thought they would.

It appears they were hiring a 7-5 coach regardless

Not enough good coaches, almost all coaching hires are gambles.

Horrible decision making all around. A/M job means significantly less with Texas and Oklahoma coming in.

Did you see who they had to hire from? 1 failed HC who had to be rehabbed by Saban & an unproven coordinator. 95% of coaching hires are from a lower level or coordinator. Over the last 10+ years there are only a handful of home run hires with championship pedigree. Saban (to Bama), Fisher (to A&M), & Meyer (to tOSU) come to mind. Harbaugh, Kelly, & Riley are debatable. After that? Pretty much all retreads, coordinators w/ no HC experience, or G5 promotions.

its mid tier as seen by this coaching search

Didn't matter who they hired, the A&M way is 8-4 or 7-5.

OU had to hire Venables, hardly a splash hire

Texas has had 3 coaches in 10 years- Strong, Herman, and now Sark. Sark had been fired multiple times and had to beg Saban for a career rehab. Sark is an alcoholic. And Texas had to hire Gary Patterson as a "just in case" back up HC to Sark because they were worried Sark wasn't up to the job.

If Texas and OU are such great jobs, what's up with their recent hires?

Since hiring one of the best DC in the game isn't a splash hire, who would OU have hired if it were a great job?

That’s the point. Venables and Sark were only known as really good coordinators.

I can see the hate you have for whatever reason it’s come off bad ….
Venables has the been the benchmark for defense for 20 years . He had chances to coach at several power 5 schools and he was OUs first choice … we didn’t settle for our 3rd and 4th choices like Florida, A@M ,LSU did .

OU has hired assistants always … we hired Barry Switzer, Stoops, Riley, and now Venables … seems like a pretty good trend of hiring assistants . It’s the Ad who is the brains … A@M Florida have struggled for the most part hiring football coaches …. Urban Meyer was a great hire atleast they got one right .

I`m an LSU fan and an 7-5 record at Duke is pretty damn
good considering the talent they attract.A@M AT 7-5 with
their resources is a crime.Elko knows how to coach.

I don't have any hate. Its just a question I've been wondering. I would have figured you could get a bigger name.

OU has 7 National Championships. All won by first time head coaches. Kirby and Dabo weren't head coaches before UGA and Clemson and they have 4 of the last 7 NCs. Coach O? You'd think after crowing about hiring a worn out has been like Fisher would have taught you something. Saban and Urban are the exception. Go down the list of NC coaches and maybe take note of how many were "only known as really good coordinators" before winning a NC.
