A whopping 88 percent of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors want an expanded College Football Playoff when the current playoff contract ends after the 2025 regular season, according to a survey conducted by Stadium.
Of those athletic directors who favor an expanded playoff, 72 percent believe eight teams should qualify.
The top response was that the eight-team playoff should consist of the Power Five conference champions, the highest-ranked non-Power Five team and the two highest-ranked at-large teams.
It was a coin-flip between holding the quarterfinal games on campus at the site of the four highest-ranked playoff teams or at bowl/neutral sites.
ADs Overwhelmingly Favor Expanded College Football Playoff

Expansion was always not that far away, just more meaningful better games

If it ever expands beyond 8 I’ll be pissed
I also look forward to the bitching about the SEC when we inevitability get 3 teams in the playoffs

"Would you all like more money?"
"Yes, actually I would! Thanks!"

would have to be the end of conference championship games wouldn't it? Has there been a year when anyone outside the top 5 would have a shot? I like 8 but it aint gonna be like march madness where a "cindarella" has any realistic shot of going to a higher seeded teams home field and getting a win....

If you are going to add games than you will have to remove some non conf games
College kids with nfl dreams do not want to play a nfl schedule in college

Why?
16 seems about perfect, I'd love to see more meaningful games with more teams getting a shot.
NCAA basketball tournament is the best tournament out there and for whatever reason some people still seem reluctant to have an 8 or 16 team playoff in FBS

I've been hoping they ultimately go to 16 teams and knock a non-conf game off and force everyone to go to 9 conference games.

Because ethics year there weren’t 4 worthy. Now you want to open it up to 16? 8 is the largest it needs to be

Because OU-LSU last year was such a great game!

4x 16 team conferences, conference championship, then 4 team playoff.

Sweet. So no more LSU-UT or LSU-Wisconsin or any other marquee OOC games.

They can do a trillion dollar stimulus in a week but takes 5 fawkin years to change the playoff

8’s a good number. I think auto bids for the P5 then a vote or some sort of systematic selector for the final 3.

NCAA basketball tournament has 68/351
NCAA football tournament currently has 4/130
Proportionally, 16 isn't far off (4 is hilariously low). Plus, FCS does 24 teams. Not suggesting that, but no idea why people think 16 is outrageous, get rid of some of these meaningless bowl games best players are sitting out in and perhaps a meaningless crappy OOC game, would be great.

I do wish they’d do away with conference championships and only play P5 though.
There’s plenty of weaklings in the P5 that everyone can get a rent a win from: Iowa state, Syracuse, A&M, Oregon State, Washington State.

They also can play up to almost 40 games. Its hard enough to add just one game[football]. Plus you can already tell the travelling fanbases are having a hard time preplanning for those potential future games of a playoff/championship, with the declining post season secondary market ticket sales. NCAA basketball tourney is played in set arenas where they can have multiple games in a day.
