It was November 28, 1981, in Birmingham, Alabama's Legion Field where history was made. On that day, the #4 Alabama Crimson Tide (8-1-1) would face off against the Auburn Tigers (5-5) for a share of the SEC championship as well as a share of history. For on this day, Bear Bryant was in position to surpass the 314 win total of famed University of Chicago head coach Amos Alonzo Stagg and become the winningest head coach in college football history.

Auburn, under first year head coach Pat Dye, did not make things easy for the Tide as they led 17-14 late into the game. However, the Tide would score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, pulling away late, and securing a 28-17 victory as well as Bear Bryant's 315th career win.

But he was sober the next morning while the other team still had a beat arse.

The Bear came from a hard area of the state with hard people who lived a hard life. By hard I mean you worked hard or starved and most everyone was tough as nails. My father in law came from that area and was close to Bear's age. He would out work you, out drink you and give you the shirt off his back...but don't frick with him.
