A friend of mine wrote this up for UKAthletics this week and figured someone might enjoy the read. A few mentions of his performances against Arkansas, State, and Georgia.

quote:

No. 1: Oct. 21, 2000 vs. Georgia With a stat line that gave the impression the game was played on a video game console, Lorenzen set numerous school and personal records in a tough loss against the Bulldogs, 34-30. His stat line read as so: 39 completions, 58 attempts, 528 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. The 528 passing yards are a school single-game record that still stands to this day. The 39 completions were a career high for him, with the 58 attempts the second most in a single game for Lorenzen. The 67.2% completion percentage was also the fourth best in a single game in his collegiate career. He had almost half of his passing yards, 250, on just three completions. One of those long completions was an 89-yard connection with tight end Derek Smith on the Wildcats' first play from scrimmage, the third-longest pass play in school history. But it was his no-look, behind-the-back pass to running back Derek Homer in the fourth quarter that wowed the crowd most of all.

What a fun tribute!
Reading that, I’m struck by how often he piloted the team to come from behind victories.

No doubt he’s currently playing behind a stout OL.
No sacks. No incompletions. No interceptions.
And all the time in the world to make the perfect throw.

So sorry for your terrible loss, UK folks.

I was a big fan of Hefty Lefty. Sad that he’s gone.

I think it was the Tennessee game where the Vol players were bitching to the refs about the UK lineman who was squashing them on the ground at the end of plays. Turns out it was no lineman but Jared that the Vols had been complaining about.

Another time I think it was Dave Baker commenting on the UK media guide listing Jared at a deuce and a quarter or a deuce and a half. I think they had the 5 second delay and the kill switch so can't remember if it made it on air but I think it was Baker that commented that the only way that number was correct was if Jared had lost an arm and a leg.

I’ve told the story about Sheldon Brown stepping in front of one of his passes thinking he had a sure interception .... a rifle shot from Lorenzen. The game was up in Lexington and it was cold as heck that night.

The ball hit Brown so hard in the chest it sounded like a bomb went off and it bounced back what seemed like twenty yards.

After the game, by the time we got out of the press boxes, players were usually gone but this night I had posted my story early and was headed to the parking lot to grab a ride back to the hotel.

The team was it there getting on buses and I walked over and talked to Brown for a few minutes, he had a big game. I asked him about that shot to his chest and he said it actually hit him just under the pads .... in his solar plexus and it knocked the wind out of him. Then he raised up his shirt and showed me the bruise shaped like the end of the football impacted really hard and as black and Shedon was you could still see the sectional stitching marks like pie marks where the ball flattened out on him.

Most amazing thing I have ever seen. The guy had a cannon, it was just incredible, and he threw perfectly aerodynamic spirals.

He was fun to watch.

He was such a great athlete for his size during his UK days. Could avoid rushes, run for yardage, and had an arm like a bazooka. Not many like him. He will be missed.

7 OT vs Arkansas. "Where in the hell y'all goin'? Y'all gonna miss one hell of a game." I'll never forget that. He was right.
