I found out the results of the final AP poll by reading a poster at the Alabama basketball game that week. It read 1.Miami 2. Nebraska 3. No change.

We rightfully split the national championship that year.

Yep, I sure did.

Granted those were different seasons, but they helped color the perception.

Much different seasons. I could find you 100 examples of great teams that weren't as good either the years before or after. You can't compare across seasons. Ever.

So, by your logic, Texas was more deserving of a national championship than Auburn was in 1983? They beat you and lost only one game all year. Sure....it was against a team that you beat, but they still beat you in 1983.

We won out after that game and beat the #1 team in the nation in the Sugar Bowl. Southern Cal ended up losing a game later than us and dropped below us in the polls. We ended up taking the AP. They ended up taking the UPI.

There is absolutely no way an undefeated Texas team, who beat Auburn by two touchdowns on the road, is left out of a national championship game with Nebraska.

Now I agree with you on that. Damn but the Southwest Conference was weak that year. Remember how bad 'Bama beat SMU in that bowl game?

The perception of the SEC back then is that it was very competitive within itself, but it wasn't really a national conference that could handle national teams.

WRONG. The 1983 SEC was by far the best conference that season and for one year was one of the best ever. I hate when people try to revise history.

No you don't. The SEC was never considered "a few notches" below other conferences. The SEC's been better than the Big Ten since the late 1950's. During the 1970's the old Big Eight and the SEC went tooth and nail against each other for conference supremacy.

I think it was worse that AU was left out of the NCG in 2004.

Look, shite happens. We can use those same arguments to claim that we got screwed out of a MNC in 1977.
