Just so I can understand the history, what are the facts behind the 1966 Orange Bowl between Alabama and Nebraska and the subsequent rule change regarding the tackle eligible play?

I remember seeing a documentary a while back, but I can't remember the specifics.

I remember AU complained about the rule.

I'm sorry it might not have been the Orange Bowl that was the catalyst.

This article says it was Vaught who changed it because he didn't like the play.

Finally, in 1968, when the committee moved to adjourn, Vaught stood up from the table, lodged a chair under the doorknob of the meeting room and said, "We are not leaving this meeting until we do something about that damn tackle-eligible pass." And so the committee did.

Off the field, they had battled, too. Bryant loved the deception of the tackle-eligible pass and used it with great effect, especially against the Rebels. Vaught considered the play a blight on the game. He began campaigning against the tackle-eligible in the late 1950s. Vaught joined the NCAA Football Rules Committee in 1966 and still couldn't get the play outlawed.

Finally, in 1968, when the committee moved to adjourn, Vaught stood up from the table, lodged a chair under the doorknob of the meeting room and said, "We are not leaving this meeting until we do something about that damn tackle-eligible pass." And so the committee did.

Inspiration for Bert, no doubt.

You know, I once had an old-time Bammer tell me that the fact that they had to change the rule on tackle-eligible proved that Bryant was such an innovative coach that no one had a clue how to stop him.

Fast-foward 50 years, and the tables have turned.

"Don't worry about it," Bryant replied. "I'll talk to the mayor. If he won't do it, he won't be re-elected."

good thread ... great link ...

The story is true. The Rules Committee had 12 members and at a stalemate over several issues (board was split with 6 being AFCA supporters). Vaught would deliver the votes *IF* he could get what he wanted....get rid of the tackle eligible.

They did and he did.

What they decided then is still in force today.....eligible receivers and mandatory numbering on the line

Bama used tackle-eligible to gain a mismatch against the much bigger Nebraska team. Now, they are getting pissy about Auburn using HUNH to gain similar mismatches.

What was the general feeling around the Bama fandom when the NCAA changed the rule on tackle-eligible?

I got the sense from the one old-timer that I met that he thought that changing the rules was an unfair way of gaining an advantage over Bear Bryant. Doesn't this strike some as hypocritical nowadays since Alabama are using the very same tactics that they once denounced?
