If expansions does happen for the SEC... they'll go towards the state of Oklahoma to expand the footprint.

OU won't come unless Okie Lite can tag along.

I would love that pod, but I don't think ol' Mizzou would win it too often.

Auburn to the Big 12? Are you doing crack AND meth? Surprised you didn't add the Grinders as well.

Bingo, and two schools from Oklahoma just isn't that desirable of an addition.

FSU is likely going to Big-12. not sure where Clemson is going but don't think it will be the SEC. The ACC is dead if they don't pull out a miracle.

Maryland is basically a "southern" state.

Are we really counting Maryland as a southern state? Yes, it's below the Mason-Dixon line and was considered "southern" at one point, but those days are long gone. Culturally it's something entirely different.

Ideally, in my view, we take North Carolina State (Raleigh-Durham metro) and Oklahoma State (outskirts of Oklahoma City metro.) We could also go deeper into Texas and maybe take Texas Tech. (Virginia Tech would be okay but there's not much of a media market in Blacksburg and it's well outside the DC metro area.) All the while, we can maintain the southern identity.

Obviously there are a lot of political issues involved in this, but if those could be sorted out, that's the path I think is best.

So what would the schedule be? Everyone in your pod, one other pod, and then one permanent "cross-pod" rival?

How about this one?

9-game schedule.
You play each team in your pod.
You have a permanent rival in EACH of the other pods (example: A&M could have MS State, VT, NC State)
You play the other three teams in one of the other pods.

With this you can schedule home-and-home over six years.

Agreed. I honestly wouldn't mind OU, but 2 schools in Oklahoma - no thanks! I just don't see expansion in the West.

I wish morons would stop suggesting FSU and Clemson. We may as well get Troy and La Tech. FSU and Clemson bring absolutely nothing to the table monetarily. ECU and VCU make more sense than FSU and Clemson.

UNC and VA Tech should be our targets - not only are they respectable football programs in new states with large TV markets and large fanbases, but basketball would make a huge gain there as well.

If the B1G is at 14, why can't the SEC stay at 14?

it's not always about money. It's about programs that "fit" with the SEC... Clemson and FSU are more natural fits.

I understand why it won't happen (because money) and I recognize that.

because 14 is unsustainable for scheduling. The B1G will eventually need 16 as well.

I'm completely with you, it would give us an old rival in the conference too... but why grab them both if you can get into North Carolina and Virginia instead?

They are incredibly natural fits, but there are even bigger reasons why they aren't coming to the SEC: South Carolina and Florida.

It doesn't seem that way to me. A 12 team 8 game schedule seems just as sustainable as a 14 team 9 game schedule. Just because you say it is unsustainable, doesn't by any means make that the case.

True, from the perspective of a Southerner. Up North though, as in New York and Mass., they consider Baltimore to be a Southern city, and not just because it's south of them. They consider that to be culturally the South. Seriously.

I will never, ever (never ever) concede that Baltimore is "Southern"

Have you seen next years SEC schedule? The huge difficulty disparity is a direct result of two things:
1. permanent rivals (and they aren't going anywhere, nor would I want them to)
2. a 14 team SEC

This will just happen time and again if the SEC stays at 14. I, for one, don't want the winner of the strongest football conference in America to be determined by who lucks out with the easiest schedule.

Great, why not just kick LSU and Tennessee out of the conference?

And all this talk about "pods" is giving me the creeps...

...can't we still call them divisions, like in the NFL?
