This research encompasses the last 18 CWS Champs from 2003 - 2021 (minus 2020/COVID).
2003 is the year that the CWS changed to the current format with two 4 team brackets and a best of 3 championship series.

Of the last 18 CWS winners, 14 have started off 2-0 or better. This bodes well for Oklahoma & Ole Miss, but doesn’t garuntee anything in 2022.

Those 14 champions started the tourney like this:
2-0 (6)
3-0 (2)
4-0 (1)
5-0 (5) These 5 teams went undefeated

4 of the remaining 18 champs either lost their first or second game plunging into the losers bracket early. , Coastal Carolina started 1-0 and came out of the losers bracket to win it all. Incredibly, 3 teams lost the opener, started 0-1 and battled back for the crown (Oregon St twice & S Carolina).

Here are the yearly results with the teams start, and final record in Omaha.

2003…..RICE…..3-0…..5-1
2004…..CSF…..2-0…..5-1
2005…..TEX…..5-0…..5-0. (Only gave up 8 runs)
2006…..OR ST…..0-1…..6-2
2007…..OR ST…..5-0…..5-0
2008…..FRESNO…..2-0…..5-2 (scored 62 runs)
2009…..LSU…..4-0…..5-1
2010…..S CAR…..0-1…..6-1 (won 6 in a row)
2011…..S CAR…..5-0…..5-0
2012…..ARIZ…..5-0…..5-0 (Only gave up 6 runs)
2013…..UCLA…..5-0…..5-0 (Only gave up 4 runs)
2014…..VAN…..2-0…..5-2
2015…..VIRG…..2-0…..5-2
2016…..COS CAR…..1-0…..6-2
2017…..FLA…..2-0…..5-1
2018…..ORE ST…..0-1…..6-2
2019…..VAN…..3-0…..5-1
2020…….n/a covid
2021…..MSU…..2-0…..5-2

BTW the SEC has 7 Champions in those 18 years with 9 runners up. The SEC has a current 2 game winning streak and a good chance to go 3 straight this year (although Oklahoma may have something to say about that).

OSU came out of the loser's bracket when we gave it away, maybe this is our fate but I doubt it. Ole Miss looks unbeatable.

Great post

They went 6-1. The most wins you can have in the CWS is 6. 4 if you have to come from losers bracket and then 2 more in the best of 3 series.

Thanks for triggering

Lost 2-1 in the first game after sweeping through the postseason. Think we win it all if we beat them Game1.

Sorry for the reminder. At least we can be proud that LSU was in the CWS a total of 18 times in history and appeared 8 times in the 18 year span referenced in the OP. (03, 04, 08, 09, 13, 15 & 17).

It’s time for LSU to challenge for another title. I think Jay Johnson will get us there soon.

That game was so brutal (as was the next, another 2-1 heartbreaker but by then we knew a title wasn’t likely).

They keep singling and bunting until the best shortstop in the country finally boots one, while we swing for the fences in a huge ballpark with dead bats/balls.

That game would’ve been 6-2 without the damn BBCOR and stupid giant soulless corporate ballpark.
