Either to clear up controversy or benefit your team
1964 - only unbeaten team after the bowls, yet Alabama won all major polls
1965- only 1 loss
1977 lost to Texas , won Orange Bowl
Pretty much every year but 1983 in the 80s
1998
2010
2011

1966 Alabama undefeated when final rankings came out,
Yet finished behind ND and Michigan State who both tied.

1960, 2004, 2007 off the top of my head. Probably could just choose the entire 1960s to be honest.

None
The more you add, the more you dilute the regular season and the less likely you get a real champion. Just look at NCAA basketball. The more schools they add, the less legit the Natty. Especially when they went from an invitational based on play to committee based on who knows what!

We've never needed more than 4 teams.
