the guys already signed are not worried about a backup plan. who the coach is, that is the important factor.

Avery Johnson or Archie Miller were much higher if we could make it appear they were a priority from the beginning.

I don't agree but lets say you're correct, priority is not equal to "public spectacle"

The fans and media were falling all over themselves when Rich Rod declined.

You sound a lot like an Anthony Grant supporter. That was his attitude and it turned out not so well. To win at a place like Alabama you have to know how to promote your program with the media and fans. If media and fans see you as a great hire, it builds positive energy around the program and recruits will flock to that. If everyone sees you as a backup plan, great coaches are more likely to shy away from that.

If we had targeted Archie Miller from day one, he is likely already our coach and for a lot less money than we will have to pay him now (even if we still have a chance with him).

Some quick questions for y'all... 1. who are the targets now AND/OR 2. have y'all hired someone and I missed it? Thanks ahead of time.

If you guys get Avery Johnson, I would like to suggest Tony Barbee as a possible assistant. He has SEC experience and I would like to see him back as part of the rivalry.

To be honest we have not heard anything coming from the athletic department or reliable sources. Fan favorites seem to be Archie Miller or Avery Johnson with Steve Prohm as a backup plan. Anyone worse than Prohm would have us pissed as hell.

I think he's probably comfortable with Cal. We'll just triple Mike Davis's current salary and bring him back as associate head coach to AJ. ;)

BS

Bama doesn't need a cheerleader, Bama needs a great coach. The wins will take care of all your concerns.

Archie Miller

You are saying he is a great promoter? Care to cite some examples.

He was not Bama's first choice, nor is Bama his first choice.
He still is Bama's if they want him, also you are arguing timeline not "public spectacle"

Bama can still get him , that is all that matters.

I like the Avery Johnson/Mike Davis combo idea too. Maybe keep Pettway around for recruiting too. It just might work.

No you don't. There was a ton of positive energy surrounding our program during Grant's first 3 years.

As long as we get a good coach, I don't care how much we pay him.

I'm starting to warm up to the Avery hire. Out of the three names now floating around, he is easily my top choice.

Will Cal be taking Barbee to the NBA with him? Doubtful.

Here are some key points why I think Barbee would be a good assistant at bama.

1. He knows the Auburn program and I think that would benefit bama.

2. He did not like Under Armour and bama is a Nike school.

3. He recruited this area.............not well, but he recruited it.

4. As an Auburn fan, I would like to see him do for the bama program what he did for our program.

The ideas floating around this thread now are absurd. I can't imagine a more ridiculous cesspool of thoughts on a coaching hire.

Unbelievable.

Thanks. And yeah, y'all have been through the wringer with lousy hoops hires. I know you see this as a chance to change that and maybe you'll get to. That said, coaching searches are always crazy and even if you get a wtf hire he may work out.

For example, I still believe Tyndall was a fantastic Xs and Os coach who would've done great things for us had he not gotten NCAA'd but at the time he was a wtf hire that folks were pissed with.

Miller is the best on your board, imo. But he will be hard as hell to pry away from Dayton.

Yep, and our program was looking like it would be successful in the first 3 years. Media, fans, and recruits loved Grant. Then he started running a boring offense, shut out the media and fans, and the program went downhill. Perception matters. We can still hire a great coach, but to act like Battle has been doing a good job these first two weeks is naive. There were much better ways to handle this.

You will if he turns out to not be good but we can't afford to fire him.

Assuming all the rumors about Avery Johnson's apparent interest in getting back in to coaching (even at the college level) are true, why are these ideas so farfetched? Mike Davis makes $200,000 a year as Texas Southern head coach and Bama could bring him home while tripling his salary as a top assistant and also give him more years towards retirement in the Alabama system. In Alabama's retirement system, you get paid 75% of the average salary of your last 3 years in the system. Davis from his previous time at Alabama and UAB likely isn't close to full retirement but he is close to getting a third to a half of his final number. At a $600,000 per year salary, we're talking over $200,000 a year in Alabama Retirement which is a strong incentive for him to come home.

If the rumors of Avery Johnson's agent being in contact with Bill Battle are true, then AJ is very much an option.
