I wonder if Saban is currently hazing Battle for making that statement.

"I've told you 1,000 times you dumb mother fricker. You say the offer wasn't committable. Damn, if you want anything done, you have to do it yourself around here."

Go back and read my previous posts on this same thread if you wish. I was one of the only Bama fans showing any concern about his lack of recruiting ability and inexperience at a power 5 level. I would have been excited about the hire, no doubt, but also concerned about how badly we overpaid. If Marshall takes that job we would be stuck with him regardless of performance for the next 7 years or so.

You should be upset if you pay any coach that is available 4 million a year. There just isn't anyone out there, who will take the job, worth that money.

I'm hearing the short list consists of Stansberry, Prohm, Crean, Gottfried and Pitino Jr.

The only person on that list who would even be seriously considered would be Crean.

Flame me for this but give me the guy that coaches the Lady UCONN team. Geno Somethingorother. He actually COACHES BASKETBALL, not yard ball you can see in any neighborhood.

Someone that can actually recruit basketball PLAYERS that are athletic, not athletes that can play a little basketball.

Bama, it was a good effort "throw money at one of the best and see what happens" was a good idea.

I trust your plan B is better than our plan A.

From a pure coaching standpoint I would say he could be a great hire. But recruiting, AAU contacts, and age would all be drawbacks.

How much of this came down to the pay behind the pay? Bama obviously ponied up more contractual salary, but I can't imagine the big money behind the scenes really commits all that much to basketball right? Whereas Wichita St's top two donors are as rich as anyone in the country, and basketball is all they've got.

There's been talk in the past about Marshall having free use of the Koch Industries air fleet and things of that nature, so I don't think it's far-fetched to assume that WSU made the money equal or better in the end.

I agree. As I have said all along, I would rather have an Archie Miller at 2.5 and then pay him 4.5 if he wins big than hire another unknown like Marshall for 4.9 a year with a long contract before he ever wins a game in a power conference or recruits a 4 star player. If we are dishing out close to 5 million, it should be for someone like Sean Miller or Jay Wright. And if they say no, then so be it, but don't give equal money to a lesser candidate at a mid major.

On the bright side, Nick Saban was plan B.

How is Bama going to explain paying whoever they hire less than they offered Marshall. If the new guy has any weight to him (Miller, Crean...even Prohm), he could say 'Well, I believe you were going to offer Marshall around 3 million per year with total control so that's what I demand'. Does Battle then say 'Well, you aren't quite at good as our first choice...sorry, 1.5 million is our highest'?

Tell them we'll pay them 3 too when they make a final 4 and get a #1 seed.

I still can't believe we offered a basketball coach "between 4.2-4.9 million per year." A guy who has never successfully recruited a 4 star player is not worth that and I have been saying that long before he turned us down. This could be a blessing in disguise. That is Calipari/Donovan money for a guy who is far from a guarantee. I would much rather have Archie Miller at 2.5 and then pay him 4.5 if he starts winning big.

I had a hard time justifying that kind of money for Marshall as well.

It definitely puts us in a tough situation because every candidate knows we are willing to overpay for the guy we want. However, at the end of the day a guy like Archie Miller knows he is not Marshall. We might have to pay 3 to get him though.

You're WRONG! Alabama has played more years than Arkansas, and Arkansas still has more total wins....

wait......too soon?

I don't see how we can go below 3 million for the next guy. You push out +$4mill for the first guy, you no longer have the ability to go cheap on the next offer.

Frankly, I was shocked the Marshall offer had gotten up to 4 million. I mean it's great that the program wants to up the ante and seriously back another sport on campus, but it's still freakin basketball.

How do we know what the offer was? Was it made public?
