While I do think money talks it has to be the right place for Marshall. Here's an interesting quote from him from well before this latest coaching search round:

quote:

"I don't care if you pay me $2 million or $3 million. If I go home and I'm losing, it's no fun," Marshall said.

The full article is linked below and some pretty big teams were trying their damndest to get him yet he turned them down. The article is from 2 years ago (2013) but it also talks about older attempts that have failed.

While I do think he was interested in Tennessee last year given his own words (I'm not sure how much). But the big thing is we were too cheap but like it or not, coaches know they can win here and our facilities are off the charts.

Bama, OTOH, can roll out the dump truck (and again money talks) but it's got a bad reputation in terms of coaches going there to die. I don't think it helped matters that after doing so well elsewhere Anthony Grant failed so miserably at Bama.

Marshall comes from a mid-major too so that has to be in his mind somewhere. And although folks forget, Grant really was a homerun hire at the time but he tanked badly at Bama.

If Bama can land Marshall it will be a coup but I'm just not sure they will. Regardless, I'd like to see Bama land a decent coach. It's good for the conference to have more good teams.

Please tell us about the lucrative post-UT careers of former Tennessee coaches.

The fact Tennessee may or may not have the same coaching problems doesn't speak any better for your program. Bama doesn't handle facts well. Fact.

It is nonsense. Wimp caused his own demise, Gottfried got lazy but just took NC State to the sweet 16, and C.M. Newton ended up being the AD at Vandy and is in the hall of fame. Hobbs wasn't a good hire for a head coach, but is still out there coaching, and Grant will end up somewhere too.

The argument I made earlier in the thread was that it's career suicide for a guy at the top of his profession like Marshall to go to bama. That's not necessarily a slap on bama though that's how it was taken.

The fact is coaches shouldn't leave any SEC jobs to go to better ones, bama should be a destination job. If guys were more successful when they left it would be more of a red flag imo

Bama will make a good hire, they just aren't in position to get the best out there, and there is nothing wrong with that

Gottfried also was banging a players' girlfriend, who was also a grad student. That's either really screwed up or a pimp move, depending on your perspective. But either way it's time to move on.

Can someone please tell me who these coaches are?

The long list of Anthony Grant, I guess. Alabama has had five coaches since 1968. Newton and Sanderson built the program. Hobbs lasted 7 seasons and was average at best. Gottfried had great success, but flamed out. And then Grant. Hardly a laundry list that's being suggested.

That's probably what ultimately cost him a job, considering what Dubose and Price had done in prior years. It wasn't going to be tolerated. But never following up his early success doomed him as well.

He lost his job because he was losing, no other reason.

We were losing a lot, were going to miss the tournament for the 3rd straight year, he was having an affair with a grad student, and he ran Ron Steele into the ground.

Any new news on Gregg?

If he does indeed turn down Bama, I'll be very interested to see who you all go after.

Seems as though Smart is who Texas is targeting. I actually thought Barnes would be a good fit at Bama. I'd pay a visit to UTEP if I were your AD and Gregg has declined.

Can anybody say one thing that is not totally positive about bama without at least one Bammer tard responding by telling us we should look at somebody else? I seriously doubt it

It's gone pretty quiet since Bill Battle boarded the plane back to Tuscaloosa yesterday.

Waiting on some updates today. Shocker fans are a bit less optimistic today than they were yesterday.

Can you say one positive thing about Alabama in general?

Let's reciprocate. I'll start. Auburn has an engineering program, with esteem, that I hope Alabama can achieve moving forward.

Can you go an entire day without mentioning Bama in a post or using the words "tard" and "moron"?

I seriously doubt it.

It depends on if you get Gregg Marshall or not. I can probably avoid those things if you get him. If you don't get him, the urge to mock all the delusion bammers have spewed on this board about their basketball program will be too hard to resist. Sorry about that
