An author is arguing that all women deserve to take paid maternity leave, even if they don't have a baby.

In an article for the New York Post, Meghann Foye explained her belief that all women should be able to take paid time off to "shift their focus to the part of their lives that doesn't revolve around their job.

So every woman should have a job that pays her to "shift the focus to the part of their lives that doesn't revolve around their job"?

I don't suppose men also need to get paid to "shift the focus to the part of their lives that doesn't revolve around their job", do they?

Carful on this link. I wouldn't stray too far away.

We all need a damn break. Vacatiom time is great but honestly. We spend way to much of the one life we live working. Its a bad system in general. I love my work. But I spent way to much of my life there.

I am a full blow capitalist but completely agree with this.

All of this is true. Working longer does not equate to working harder and it damn sure isn't efficient the way we do it here in the US.

Either the daily business hours need a reduction or we need more of a 4 days on/3 days off model across the board.

Disclaimer: I really do love my current job, too. I just love my wife and living in my house more.

I really don't understand how 4/10's haven't become the accepted work week nationwide. I work 10 hours a day most of the time anyway, and I get more done when I don't have the excuse of "eh, I'm leaving in an hour anyway."

Just another drop in the "get paid to do nothing" bucket.

Exactly. Usually the first and last hours of the workday are massively unproductive.

shite, everyone just goes through the motions on Fridays too. The contractors on site here work 4/10's so it's even worse than in a normal office setting. People literally show up to have a few cups of coffee and start gauging how much shite they'll catch for leaving right after lunch.

This is stupid. However, I do think we should have a different attitude in this country about vacation.

I agree that we should refocus how we address leave for workers in this country. Common sense would tell you that giving employees some paid sick leave/vacation generally equates to a healthier, happier worker. And I'm a pretty firm proponent of paid maternity leave for the mother and father. Part of the issues in society today is the lack of parental involvement and we're the better for it as a society when our hard working parents are afforded the time to bond with their children during the most crucial developmental phases.

I also don't disagree with the notion that in some places employees with children get some more leeway than those without. I'm not a fan of subscribing to the notion that a childless worker = no priorities and should be the one to "take one for the team" on holidays/etc unless they want to.

The whole Me-Ternity bit is going about it the wrong way though.

This. I give full credit to Europeans for figuring this out already.

I propose that any time someone takes maternity leave, everyone else in the office gets the same amount of hours to use as vacation time.

I don't plan to ever have kids, so should I be put at a disadvantage because the bitch two cubicles over pops a frick trophy out every other year?

I get the idea of wanting an unpaid leave situation. Companies should be more open to an extended leave that is unpaid if the timing is right for the interests of said company.

Getting an extended paid VC to "figure your life out" is ridiculous. That's what college is for. If you don't figure it out in college, you have to figure it out as you grow.
