Just throwing this out there, but from the article it says they are purchasing these from the Army. Literally thousands of these were retrograded and shipped back to the states from Iraq. The army doesn't have the money to maintain/store all of these. Plus, all the branches are hurting for money in a bad way...quick way to make some cash.
But I do agree it is a little scary. Too many of these toolbag civilian orgs have access to military grade shite.

Looks like I'm going to have to buy a bigger gun.

not many MRAP made it over to iraq/afganistan, was and still is an issue for troops. Army still has an ongoing order worth several billions. each vehicle cost about 500k and 100k to ship. usually if they cant afford to keep them, they leave them or destroy them

Nah man, MRAPs were exclusive outside the wire in Iraq from about 2009 on, there wasn't a shortage. There were thousands and some were sent to Afghan after the Iraq drawdown. I can't speak for a shortage in Afghanistan, but I doubt there is a shortage there either.

What's the ride like in one of those?

Depends on the model...I've only been in a few different ones, and have limited seat time, but they are pretty smooth for a tactical vehicle. The Buffalo model looks like a goddamn spaceship with all the buttons it has. They are pretty fast too, considering the amount of armor.

I see them on I-59/20 (hauled on flatbeds, not driving
). They take them to Anniston, I suppose, for retrofit. There must have been a shitload of them because seeing them is an every other day kind of deal. Tanks come by on the train near my house, too, but not as much now as they did a few years ago.
ETA: they don't have thermal insulation under the armor, do they? If not, you can cook them out with sugar bombs, like the IRA did to the Brits in N. Ireland, back in the 80s.

Yeah, we're seeing them all along I-20 where I think they are being sent to Force Protection down in Edgefield for the retrograde upfits.
Bottom line is that these are street sweepers, one of these can take on 100,000 poorly armed civilians and win, easily. There is absolutely zero need for 2,700 of these to be put on the streets of the United States of America.
Yeah, they do have thermal insulation btw. That's what they were made for - mine resistant to the max.

I see scrooster already answered your question..to add, EFPs cut through the armor, or any armor, like nothing. Also, if you can flatten a tire they become kind of useless. They weight too much for a lot of jacks and a lot of models don't carry spares.

Technically, the Coast Guard falls under Homeland Security, not DoD.

Who are going to run these tanks? Our own troops? Do you think american troops would have a full fledged gustapo type war against their own brotherin? Im sure some would go with the plan but i would have to think most american troops would not.
