Why are so many Southerners so stuck in their ways?

Serious question.
What is it that has shaped the south to become so much different than the rest of the country?
Between racism, skewed religious views and obesity, this part of the country has become the armpit of America.
What the hell happened?
eta: not all southerners, obviously.

Racism is everywhere man and I do not appreciate the "armpit" comment. While most down here are stuck on tradition there are open-minded people.

Oh it's everywhere, I know. But I think it's fair to say that it's more prevalent in the south. I've traveled, and know people from all across the US from my line of work.

Racism and skewed religious views exist everywhere in the world. Most countries are way worse than we are.

I will be honest, it does skew to the South a little in some areas, but there is bad stuff all around.
I am in New Mexico and there is plenty of it here. In fact there are many Hispanics that have reverse racism as well. I also see major obesity here among the residents, I have teachers who are friends and they say their parents have very little interest in their children's education.

Becase people here are stuck on "tradition". Most people here are scared of change. "If it worked for my daddy, and his daddy, it'll work for me." That's why I'm suprised that Ole Miss was able to change Col. Reb without a lot of hassle.

Chicago is the most racist city in America. The most "out there" religious views in this country are in the west, not the south.
Don't fall for the liberal "whites are southern racist rednecks" bit. They can be just as hateful in Cali and New York.
