Yeah I'm sure prejudice of white police officers/judges/whateveryoucanthinkof is is a huge factor in 1 in 3 black men being imprisoned in their lifetime. All the white mans fault

Oh, come the frick on. Do a little research. Those of color are sent to prison for the same shite that Caucasians are given probation for on a daily basis.

Many of them simply don't have the respect, or understanding, for law and order. Sure some of them do, but a large portion don't. Nothing is holding back their race from being successful in America except themselves but they'll never realize it or admit it.
They hold a more tribal attitude i.e a close relationship to their friends and neighborhood, and abide by the law of the street. They hold little respect for "white man's law" because they see it in their eyes as something that is there to hold them back, so they rebel against it.

Dat hook so shiny tho.....

Most judges and police officers ARE white.
Surely there's a reason that most judges and police officers are white.

And that is entirely the reason that the factor is 1 in 17 vs 1 in 3. Yeah, you betcha.

but if you dig into stats, the fact of the matter is that minorities spend time in prison, more often than not, for the same crimes that Caucasians get probation for.
Social stigma. Minorities are perceived to be more likely a repeat offender, so the judges are biased when it comes to sentencing.
A lot of it has to do with perception.
For example a rich white kid in college gets busted for weed..judge says well he is in college and has a bright future, I'll let him off easy.
Poor black kid who dropped out of HS gets caught selling weed --Judge thinks well this kid is a frickup and needs to learn a lesson.
Is it right? Probably not, but it is what it is. All it comes down to is, don't blame others when it was you who broke the law.

But seriously... I don't have an answer for you. Some argue that it's because police and court are biased to charge/prosecute minorities more so than they are whites. Another explanation people like to use is that laws are structured to punish minorities and not whites, an example being the far more severe penalties for crack cocaine than pure cocaine.
I think that's true to a certain extent, but the truth is minorities generally are committing more crimes and no one really knows why.

I'm being serious. What would you think the reason for the high incarceration rate is?
It's largely in the ghetto culture part of the black community..but in that lies a high disrespect for law and order. Many of them see it as the "white man ruling" and their natural reaction is to rebel against it.
Why must so many get involved in the drug trade when they could use those entrepreneurial skills to run a legitimate business? Nothing is keeping them from doing that, yet they choose to break the law instead.

And of course, there's no one real answer.

Yep. People want to believe there's a simple solution to everything, but I'm one who thinks things are what they are. I also think we could do a FAR better job of improving society on an individual level.

Must suck to be racist and paranoid.
I live in the middle of the city of Atlanta. I've never felt threatened. Not a single time have I ever felt like I wasn't safe.
I don't look at every African American as if they're a potential felon though.
My three African American cousins aren't felons. My African American aunt isn't a felon. They've never committed a crime in their life.
Oh, hey! They're beating the odds!
