Appreciate the response.

I know a thing or two about LRS stuff and also know how bad it sucks to be re-classed to a job you didn't really want.

No prob. Yeah, it sucks, but after awhile you gotta move on and just play the hand you're dealt.

I was dumb enough to wash out of EOD and get stuck with a shitty job.

Lots of folks wash out of EOD. No shame in that.

It's all good though because I had some good times and am about to retrain again.

Congrats! If I were staying in long term I'd definitely be looking to go to OTS or at least retrain, but life is leading me in a different direction, I think

Army - Pilot - Little Bird

If that wasn't possible then I would apply to be a designated marksman and hope I get my hands on an Mk. 11

I joined and I chose Electronics.

But, if I could do it again I'd be an Air Traffic Controller.

Those mofo's make $150k a year.

I work for the FAA as a tech and I'm surrounded by Porches and BMW's in the parking lot.

We used to have a saying in the Navy, "Choose your rate, choose your fate."

I'm pissed everyday I go to work.

For some reason I read the title (not the whole OP) as like "What military occupation would you like to live under."

to which I'd have to say the Americans cause our GIs give out chocolate bars

Do you know how stressful their jobs are though? Especially at busy airports?

There isn't a job in Atlanta that would wouldn't want less than being an air traffic controller at Hartsfield-Jackson.

I work at the largest TRACON in the country.

It ain't that bad.

And tower controlling is easy.

It's departures and 5 mile inbounds. At bigger airports ground control has a tougher time. That's why you sit so long before you go to your gate.

Trust me it's an easy $150k. If you've been in the military. For the average Joe, probably not so much.

Hartsfield-Jackson is the busiest airport in the world.

There are flights arriving every few seconds. That would suck.

FAA is hiring controllers off the street.

They will train you.

I'm telling you. Easy money. Stressful yes, but not as stressful as being broke.

I'll keep that in mind. I don't mind stress if I'm banking.

The stress of the job I'm working right now doesn't equate to the pay Only plus is most of my work is internet-based, so I can fool around with y'all on one screen and work on the other

Anyone who doesn't say FAO clearly isn't educated on what FAOs do.
[link=(
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_area_officer)]FAO Wiki[/link]

Essentially, a foreign area officer is the political attache to foreign embassies for their respected branch. They get shipped off to language school to learn the native language of that country then spend 2-4 years attending political dinners and parties and coordinating military events through the embassy. If you put in 20 in this relatively basic job (if you aren't in Russia or Benghazi), you end up speaking minimum 5-6 languages

Also, when you leave, the fact that you are multilingual and have experience working with high ranking international political figures, you will easily be hired in the private sector in big time international business roles or in the public sector doing research on international relations.

My dad's classmate from West Point retired as an O-6 with 25 years then immediately got a job as an Senior Executive Service I level pay (O-7 pay grade equivalent) and is now a level II. He lives in Germany and balls out with his pension and huge salary like a boss. He rakes in some 300k+ works 9-4 and when he retires on pension alone he will pull in around 170k$

He gives my dad shite about not taking his slot for FAO school

Here's the deal with this job. If you can block out the fact that you are dealing with lives and just make sure the blips don't disappear and or collide with each other you're good.

That being said, a tower environment is much easier. Even at places like ATL or LAX. The real stress is at the TRACONS, where its a small area filled with thousands of aircraft all headed to different places, but we have a system, and it works very well.

Being a military guy, and understanding stressful situations, you'd do fine.

Currently in the Army Guard as a 15Q - Air Traffic Controller.

The job is not stressful if you're good at it and like a challenge. I don't do it civilian side (train dispatcher for BNSF), but the guys in my unit that work in Memphis Center and DFW Center love it and wouldn't take any other job.

I like tactical controlling, though. I don't like being cooped up in an office building when I'm train dispatching, so I don't think I'd like doing ATC on the civilian side.

My favorite facet of Army ATC is knowing I can drop into any area, at any time, and control. I'm going to Pathfinder school next month. Can't wait. :D

Air Traffic Controller was one of the few career paths I "almost" took before I got into what I'm doing.

The original plan was to go to Embry Riddle and become an ATP and work for the airlines. I was afraid of the debt so I looked into ATC, I'm glad I avoided it.

I know a couple guys that got into it and they say it's pretty tedious and repetitive, almost like factory work. Plus if you get assigned to an ARTCC you're stuck living in some armpit suburb.

Pretty much this is why I wouldn't want to control in the civilian world. It doesn't seem like the same awesome feeling I get from tactical controlling.

Shameless plug, but here's a video about my unit.

We just got the MOTS a couple months ago and it's BADASS.

Trust me, when you get back to the civilian world. Every job is tedious bullshite.

You've been trained in something that will make you a lot of money and guarantee you can go wherever you want.

Don't toss it in the trash can because you don't get to forward control. The real world isn't full of bad asses that blow shite up, it's full of regular joes trying to find a nut.

Make your skill work for you.

ETA because fricking ipad sucks so,e times. Yep.

I know someone that's an airline pilot with Air Wisconsin. Don't know anyone else that's even been involved with civilian or commercial air.

My dad was friends with one of the real pilots involved with the whole Blackhawk Down fiasco in Somalia. He got the Silver Star.

Haha. I figured out what "assests" was.

I'm looking to get into nursing, work in an ER, and eventually work my way into being a flight nurse. I just need to do something a little more "hands on" than sit in an office.

The military has also filled me when an overwhelming need to feel like what I'm doing is actively helping someone. Despite holding hundreds of lives in your hand while controlling (thinking centers, here), you don't really feel it.

As for money, my wife is a doctor, which frees me up to pursue whatever I like and not really sweat about money. :D I thank God everyday for her. Haha

And yeah...bring on some doctor/nurse jokes. My body is ready.
