People on this board always talk about what schools "fit". And what schools don't. Obviously they are talking about what schools feel southern. So that begs the question...where the hell is the south?

To me the south/southern states are:

Virginia
Kentucky
Tenneessee
Alabama
Mississippi
Louisiana
Georgia
The Carolinas
Arkansas
Florida
I guess you could throw Texas in there or West Virginia.

Alabama
Mississippi
Georgia
South Carolina
Arkansas (questionable)
Florida (becoming "un south")

North Florida is Southern
South Florida is Northern

East Texas is Southern
West Texas is Western

West Virgina is not Southern
Maryland / Virgina were Southern but have been over run by Yankees

UNC = Southern school in a Southern state
Dook = Yankee school in a Southern state

The rest are fairly Southern tho you have to separate Low Country / Hill Country / Deep South as defined sub cultures.

I agree. I would have to say Louisville and the 3 counties near Cinicy in NKY aren't southern at all. But other than those areas Kentucky is basically just Tenneessee.

KY = bourbon
TN = whiskey

Louisville and Cincinnati (NKY) are just "river towns" in a southern state.

If you were in the original 11, you're Southern.

I'd say the northern part of LA (similar to MS)

The southern (cajun) part of LA is a totally different country.

Any state that seceded is the South.

And then throw in the Border States.

Roughly the entirety of the area confined within the Lower 48 states bounded by everything north of Ocala, FL…to Appomattox, VA…west to Branson, MO…and then south to Mae’s Beach, LA

NOVA isn't the South, but the rest of Virginia generally is.

Simplistic way of looking at things. Tenneessee almost didn't secede. While Kentucky was ready to secede and was invaded by the Confederacy before they could secede. Too much nuance in that. The decision to secede was made primarily by politics. Not if you felt your state was southern or northern.

Some of these are partly Southern I'd say. Parts of Virginia are Southern, parts of Kentucky, a decent chunk of Florida.

Hell, while a good chunk of Arkansas is Southern as can be, you can make a very strong argument that NW Arkansas is probably more Midwestern now.

Yeah, that's the pain of being at the top and sides of the south. You get regions that aren't southern like NOVA, NKY, NWAK.

NOVA isn't the South

It was long ago

Just like Maryland was Southern leaning outside of Baltimore in early America as immigrants came through the port, then migrated to settle the South. Many old Southern families came through Maryland as well as Virginia.
