Europeans are becoming more and more sedentary, the much bugger issue is their diet. They simply eat less and healthier as a whole. One of the biggest differences is that they eat very little red meat compared to Americans, and their "cheap" foods aren't as carbohydrate rich.
Yet they use large amounts of fat and dairy in their food. Quantity is probably the biggest reason. You arent bribed with large portions of food over there at restaurants

There's definitely a fitness/aesthetic gap in America. We have 50 year olds who are insanely fit (and with the help of cosmetic surgery) look amazingly hot. Then we have 21 year olds who are obese and already look way over their age.
Anyway, I'm constantly amazed at the fitness of our "high society" women in my town. I just went and picked my kids up from a summer day camp today, and it was chockful of great looking women. Went to the public swimming pool on Sunday, and it wasn't quite so impressive.

I pointed this out to my wife the other day. We were eating at a deli in Southlake, TX (one of the wealthiest cities in the nation). All of the women in there varied from just "thin" to downright bangin' bodies. My wife hadn't noticed at first, but, after I said something, she noticed an older lady (65-ish) with the muscular tan legs of a college cheerleader. My theory is that they're all trophy wives with access to good food, supplements, and personal trainers. Sure, you can be healthy without being rich, but money makes it a lot easier.
