Doing a reading for one of my classes that focuses on the Illuminati, and i cannot find in the reading that I have the answer to this. I have googled as well and cant find a solid answer. I have never read or saw the movie. I get the characteristics of what the reading describes the enemy as, but cannot figure the mentality part out.
TIA.
TIA.

I believe, in your context, it’s using the scare tactic that there is an enemy that is about to enter the country, or has, and the government needs to curb individual rights and freedoms and institute widespread surveillance in order to protect the populace-such as passing the Patriot Act.
Research,“seige mentality.” There’s a large “us” vs. “them” mental component to it.

Yeah. The movie "Enemy at the gates" covers the siege of Stalingrad in ww2. Its not necessarily just rights, but laws can be ignored as well in the name of security from the enemy who is at the door, and all must be done to combat them
Think of it as needing a bad guy to accomplish certain ends, be they positive or negative for your citizens

That makes sense. I figured since she put it as a question it would be identified in the reading, but wasn't. It just identified characteristics of the enemy.
It was about the forming of the bravarian Illuminati in 18th century and how it spread. Focused a lot on Mason's, anti-masons and Catholic and anti-Catholic movements. As well as, literature that spread the ideas of the Illuminati and the French revolution connections.

Essentially, the Enemy at the Gates mentality is what we have had here in the US ever since September of 2001.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you

Yeah I think DSJ was correct with the siege mentality. Enemy at the gate I think was thrown in there because the writing discribes the enemy, but the teacher probably put it to be difficult or to think critically about the mentality in regards to the reading. She's like that. 39 page article and 5 question quiz that uses words that contradict each other. Had her last semester for persuasion and she's a very hard teacher. Nice to me, but I suck at her tests/quizzes.

It's when you are in a public setting from which you cannot easily remove yourself and you've been fighting a crowning turd for the past hour.

It's a senior seminar at a university. It's to promote critical thinking and other stuff. She's a philosophy PhD in the journalism Dept. It's outside of my Major, and that's the point/requirement of the senior seminar
And KSG, I'll take note of that comparison & use it. Thanks baw.

I think it's more like when you're pulling in to your driveway and you see the Jehovah's Witnesses coming down the street amd you know they saw you.

Sounds like an Orange Mad Bad struggle session, not a seminar for critical thinking. "Enemy at the Gates mentality" in today's conversation is a slam against immigration control advocates, accusing them of hysteria and histrionics. Ms. Philosophy PhD isn't as subtle and smart as she probably thinks she is.

Oh you are very correct. It doesnt mean that I have to change my mind about how I feel.

Shes very smart, but not subtle. It showed a lot in persuasion, but I learned a lot that I can use for myself and my own beliefs, and I can definitly tell that this is a class shooting down conspiracies. Im not ignorant

I took it because even though it isnt how we feel, I can gather the information and use it on my side like I said. She does a great job pointing things out, but there are always both sides, and that is what we all should learn from.

Yeah-there's no arguing about this. Just google the term and that's the first thing that comes up. I used a more classic example that, in my estimation, is a better illustration of "enemy at the gates," which, in the current context you cited, is a perversion of "siege mentality."
