Haha I've read plenty of the bible just never from beginning to end. And I look at the Bible for what it is. The Word of God written by man. Faith is what it's all about.

But I did crack up at your comment.

Adult swim. I turn it on at bedtime and wind up watching a couple hours instead of getting my necessary 8 minimum. I'm a cranky arse old man if I sleep less.

Can some Catholic explain why you need to "give up" something for lent, rather than "do good" for lent?
I figured it would help the individual and society better if you had a new crop of charity volunteers, rather than a bunch of suppressed folks brooding over not smoking cigarettes out back.

The season of lent is based on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving hence the need to fast or give up something. Many Catholics focus on doing something good as well for a substitute.

is this still a real thing. I thought we just kept the mardi gras part of it.

Hell yes it's real. Just notice all the fish sandwich commercials on TV this week. I never noticed it until a Catholic girl pointed it out to me last year.

There is actually no historical proof that there was ever a black pope. The best we have is the three known popes from northern Africa, all of which were almost certainly Arabic and not "black". The problem is compounded by the fact that the concept of "black", and race in general, didnt exist for another 1,000 years.

Nobody really knows much about the race of many historical figures prior to the mid-1400s because people often didnt write about skin color. Many people actually believe that Augustine was black, though all historians dispute that.

1: It isnt just catholics. Catholics are just the only ones who have a special day dedicated to the beginning of lent (Ash Wednesday). Many mainstream protestants (methodists, lutherans, etc.) participare.

2: It represents the 40 days Jesus wandered in the desert and was tempted by Satan, for those who believe in that.
