Just as an addendum to this conversation, I want to know OT's opinion.

My girlfriend is 19, I'm 28. Is there anything wrong with this?

Other than dating a 19 year old would make me want to blow my brains out, nothing wrong with it.

That's what I'm talkin' about.

Just asking because most of my family is giving me shite about it.

I had a hard time dating anyone under 21 once I turned 21. That would drive me crazy. I don't see anything wrong with it though as you're both consenting adults.

There's a few years difference between me and the current SO though. But he handles himself probably better than some of the 34 year old men I know.

Yeah, it's been pretty easy so far. Some hiccoughs with her family (as well), but other than that no problems.

I totally sympathize with the "everyone under 21 is difficult" type of thing, though. I never knew how stupid 19 year olds could be, even when they're really smart.

Yes, laws and attitudes do change over time. The problem for the crowd arguing that pedophilia is on the road to acceptance is that the changes in laws over the past fifty years has been AWAY from acceptance.

We punish it more harshly than we did in the past.

Then PublicPrivate said that we are always the strictest immediately prior to acceptance. Which is obviously absurd given the example of marijuana. Colorado and Washington state were some of the most lenient toward pot prior to their legalization.

It seems more of a mental affliction than anything else, we should try to help those suffering before they hurt someone else.

This is true. Much has been learned about sexual orientations over the past 50 years. For much of the 20th century, homosexuality, pedophilia and other less well-known sexual orientations were lumped under the word deviancy because they differed from a norm or from the accepted standards of a society.

There was little interest in breaking out those sexual orientations that were harmless from those that were actual threats to society. As the 20th century advanced and civil rights movements became prominent, America began to educate itself and realized that millions of people who have no control over their sexual orientations were being unfairly penalized because they were grouped in with genuine pathological sexual orientations.

When homosexuality was removed from the deviancy group, more light was focused on pedophilia and America was shocked to see that pedophiles hide in plain sight. Most of them can function in the adult world and use that advantage to manipulate their way into contact with children, their targets.

From priests to parents to the pillar-of-society next door, pedophiles shape shift their way into influence over young children and then effect their damaging compulsions upon them. They prefer a low profile, but public education is making the public more aware of their tactics and parents, schools and other guardians are being careful about whom to trust with the care of children.

I don't think we will ever accept pedophilia within our lifetime. I do think ephebophilia and hebephilia will become legal.
