i have yet to hear a useful argument as to why getting an id is disfranchising. and i'll call republicans just as much idiots on anything, but only one side thinks it's bad and their reasons are not good by any stretch of the imagination.
that's not directed at you or stonehog, because of your stances, you're sharp guys that i just disagree with, i just don't get how this is the least bit harmful to a soul.

ok. and i say that they would do more good than harm.

quoting yourself is not an argument.
But you equated the argument over voter IDs to rape. No one is arguing against rape laws.

correct. i made it clear that it was hyperbole.
my question is why is anybody arguing against a law that would make breaking the law (that's a good law) more difficult?

That's correct but I don't see how or why anybody would argue against voter id laws either.

oh come on. they're not mizz_cou or tuba. stone's a welcher but he can at least carry on about 1/2 of the political conversations while making sense and not name-calling.

That's true, at least for Spleen.

Because getting a photo ID is a financial barrier to the ballot box, just like Jim Crow was.

It's not in every case, but the potential is there. Many people in this country have no birth certificate, nor a means to obtain one. It's difficult, if not impossible in some cases, to get a n ID without a birth certificate.
I don't think Voter ID's are bad. I think every one of the current laws being pushed by Republicans that I've read are overkill.
And most of my stance on them is based on the belief that I think the in-person voting fraud meme is grossly overstated, and is not the rampant problem it is being portrayed to be by some on the right.

The current laws being push by the GOP are certainly to benefit the GOP. Either they believe they are losing elections because of fraud (how else would Obama be elected am I rite?) Or the political operatives can do the math on the demographics who have IDs and those that have a smaller share.
Actual conservatives like those in this thread aren't wrong, it's a good idea on its face. It requires insuring no one is disenfranchised. I'm sure none of them disagree with that but won't like the effort that would entail.
Voter IDs are a good idea though, because you want to do everything you can to have no one question the results and thus legitimacy of an election.

How does one obtain a FREE photo ID?

Posted on 9/30/14 at 3:07 pm to 3nOut

Posted on 9/30/14 at 3:09 pm to Gladius Veritas
Well I mean, nothing is actually free.

I understand that argument.... but it's a very slippery slope.
anecdotal: i had homeless a guy that used to come around and ask for jobs around the house. we'd feed him and let him do some work and pay him. actually got to know him a bit. i'd run him around and cash checks he got for him that he got for other jobs. one day i asked him if he had a SSN or anything to hold down a steady job and he said he literally did not know his birthday or SSN. So i said i'd take a day off of work and go with him to SS and see what we could find out so that he could start getting his life back on track. He wanted none of it. Now the guy wasn't a moocher. he always worked hard and wouldn't take money without doing something, but it says something that he didn't want to do anything to get his life back on track. maybe he was wanted, maybe he owed child payments?? i don't know but he had no desire.
you may think that has nothing to do with the argument you presented, but it does. if people want to vote, they should want to do it legally. i would wager that the case you present of people unable to get ID happens less than voter fraud.
