If it's south of Gainesville, it's not the South. While you're correct about Atlanta, it's the most "Southern" major city. So we still count it.
Also, go make a Sherman joke to an Atlanta native and you'll see how southern it still is.

They may be few, but I've almost gotten into a fight with an old school ATL'n for suggesting I was going to burn a bowl like Sherman did Atlanta.

Well, I tend to not speak my mind in public lately after it was pointed out multiple times that I'm very insensitive toward people here.
