Scientific Research of Trolling
They conducted two online studies with over 1,200 people, giving personality tests to each subject along with a survey about their Internet commenting behavior. They were looking for evidence that linked trolling with the "Dark Tetrad" of personality traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism.
the associations between sadism and GAIT (Global Assessment of Internet Trolling) scores were so strong that it might be said that online trolls are prototypical everyday sadists."

Where do you draw the line between talking shite and having fun with it compared to this:
Which could be shortened to this:
They are essentially synonymous. Talking shite about sports in an effort to humiliate others in order to bring joy to ones self makes you a sadist. Who knew? That covers about 95% of us all.

"everyday sadist"—someone who actively seeks to cause us emotional pain. Given the potential for overlap among sadism, narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism, for the purposes of the below we will refer to anyone who purposefully causes emotional harm as an everyday sadist,
