Posted this on the LSU Travel Board and only received a few responses. Looking for more recommendations.
My husband and I are looking to move to Tennessee. We are both 60 and looking for a very conservative, safe area outside of the city limits of Nashville or Knoxville.
Husband works from home.
We drive up through Nashville to Indiana frequently to visit our son, daughter and law, and newborn grandson. We have also traveled to eastern Tennessee many times.
We currently live in the Madisonville/Covington, LA area and love it here, but want to be closer to our grandson.
Any recommendations, TIA

North of Nashville (about 1/2 hour) and nice area. Really has grown in bast 20 years (Dollar General is HQ'd there) but 3 town in that cluster with easy access to the highway and close to Nashville and Bowling Green.
Might want to look just over the state line KY / TN as you would be closer to Bowling Green (college town and Corvette factory) and home to Houchens Industries (one of the larger private corporations in the USA).

spent 6 years in Knoxville. I really liked the Maryville/Townsend area. It is a little off the interstate but Watauga Lake/Mountain City area is more rural, but a beautiful place.

I have been researching Maryville, Loudon, Lenoir in the Knoxville area. I have been told to stay away from Oak Ridge area due to Nuclear Plant/toxic wastes.
I also am interested in the Henderson, Gallatin areas.

Goodletsville is the 3ed city in this area
How are you planning to spend retirement?
If you road travel this 3 city area is a good base

My husband is semi-retired. He retired from the Fed Government (computer programmer) and is now doing contract work from home. I do not work.
We are only interested in Tennessee. It is a halfway point between Carmel,Indiana (where our oldest son, wife, and newborn grandson live), and Louisiana. It is a better place for retirement and obviously very beautiful. We have 2 other sons (25 and 27, both still single, graduated from college with great jobs.) It will be only my husband and I moving.
I prefer to be no more than 10 /15 minutes away from groceries, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, etc...

Are any of those areas prone to flooding?

Bedroom community for Indianapolis. If you are Catholic, used to be some good schools in that area for your grandkids. Some are feeders for SEC and B1G schools and it is a straight shot on a single highway from Nashville to Indianapolis.
Seems flooding is a bigger issue south of Nashville but I have spent less time there. North (Hendersonville) may have flood issues but do not remember any in Goodletsville. Spent less time in Gallitain that the other 2 but remember a small airport there if needed.
I can say for the retired set, Nashville has good health care and doctors while the 3 cities above have been building assisted living places the past decade if it gets to that point.
I think the 1-75 drive (mountains) can be harder so if they lived in Cincinnati or Southern OH. The I-65 has nowhere near the grades in bad weather and pretty fast and easy drive from Nashville to Indianapolis.
Did you both graduate from SEC schools? If you fly to games, Nashville is probably the better spot to fly out of but it is south of Nashville but easy access via Briley Parkway you can pick top from Goodlettsville / Hendersonville.

Yes, we are Catholic.
Carmel, Fishers, and Geist, Indiana are really, really nice!
I think we are leaning more towards the Nashville area then Knoxville area. I love the drive up through Bowling Green, Louisville, etc. to Indiana. I am amazed at how clean the roads/highways are up there... Tenn, Kentucky, Indiana. Healthcare is very important also.
Thanks for the recommendations!

Kentucky may be last in most things but they are usually very good with roads
They have been widening the highway from Nashville to Louisville since it seems like the 90's but most is 3 lane now. Bowling Green has grown from 1 - 2 exits to 5 - 6 in the past 20 - 40 years. If I had bought land there would be wealthy now.
If you like Bowling Green it is not a bad place to retire. Houchens probably keeps the Bowling Green area nice as it is privately held so no crappy private equity or Wall Street to screw up a good thing. I think the family owns 40% and the employees own the other 60%. Wish more companies were run like this as better for the USA and better for the people.
If you are Catholic, I suggest a trip to Bardstown the to see the 1st non European diocese in the USA. A trip to Gethsemani for Mass (and they now make food for sale), coupled with a visit to Willett Distillery (an original distillery and historically Catholic owned), and lunch at Talbott is the perfect trifecta! If you read the story on the wall, it is true, but incorrect. The account is based on the fictionalized story account written by Washington Irving but it was based in a real person who I learned about as a young man.
Have you ever stopped in Columbus ? Indiana (the one with the unique red bridge on the Highway. If so, worth a stop as the prominent family / industry spent their money to build really good architecture. Well worth a day trip if this interests you. Also, I have been on retreat at both the abby in Bardstown and the one in St Meinrad and would suggest a retreat at both but preferred Meinrad.
A day at French Lick / West Baden is also worth a visit to see (2) 800 room hotels in the middle of nowhere. They were built in the early days of gambling even tho it was illegal for 100 to 200 years. It is in the Top 5 destinations gambling spots in the US (has spas and good food without the gaudiness of Vegas). The West Baden was the largest dome in the world before the built the domes in Houston and NOLA as the owner was in gambling and circuses and the center off the hotel was used for his circus performances. Went bust in the Great Depression before being donated to the Jesuits for their order before being converted back to a hotel in the past 20 years or so.

So much great info.! We will definitely check out those places! I am saving all the info. that you have suggested so that when we finally make the big move to Tennessee, we will be closer to those attractions and will be able to take our time and explore.
Now, just doing a lot of research on where in Tennessee would be good for us. I am really liking the Hendersonville area. I love some areas south of Knoxville (Loudon, Maryville), just worried about the Nuclear Plant/Toxic Wastes and Fires. I have been reading so much about the Oak Ridge situation, so we will probably go with somewhere around Nashville. I really haven't looked into north of Knoxville.

Problem with the I-75 corridor (Knoxville to Cincinnati) is the grade and drive in bad weather. I was heading out of Athens, TN (the worst trap in the USA) about 5 mins ahead of the rock slide a few years ago. The I-65 from Nashville to Louisville only has 1 grade (just north of Nashville) and it is maybe a mile long. As I get older this just becomes a bigger deal than when I was younger.
The area around Sewannee is beautiful but the grades and drop offs are an issue in rain and snow.

We really do enjoy the drive on I-65 from Nashville to Louisville to Indiana. It's an easy and scenic drive. We will probably end up somewhere outside of Nashville. That's the area we are focusing on.

No on Farragut. Traffic has gotten worse and there isn't much land available anymore. If he is working from home...I'd look around Norris. You are a pretty quick trip South to Knoxville...you are in the country and right around Norris Lake. Note...that this isn't the suburbs...this is rural...but it's close enough to town that you still can get to everything you need to pretty easily.
