From the evolution thread the renewed series Cosmos has become very important... why doesn't everyone watch this?

Some of my friends who believe in evolution, are more excited by science than most, and love "outer space" don't watch cosmos.... even though I've told them too.... They don't seem to view it as either entertaining or fun.... whereas I see it as one of the most entertaining things available...

I took a long break from watching alot of things like Cosmos.. but I also didn't have someone saying "Dude, you really need to watch this..."

I guess my question is what's the key to getting people to watch this type of programming.... they already believe in it, the show is packed full of things that keep it interesting, but why don't they want to learn more... and what would make them want to learn more..?

I'd rather watch sports or Captain America, usually

I do happen to watch a few discovery channel and national geographic documentaries and the like while I'm stationary biking or working out on the elliptical, though. Mainly because learning about stuff takes my mind off the torture I'm doing to my body

I just find sports more fascinating, I guess. But that's not a knock on educational TV. That's just me.

I tell my girl friends this all the time. They spend hours on the beach reading Us Weekly and People magazine and I say why not read something that benefits your life like Mean Genes (read!) or Wilson Quarterly or anything that makes you more informed. Of course not all the time but at least once? But they like their trash.

I rarely get my hands on a magazine anymore, but I really enjoy reading the Economist

Personally, I don't watch much TV at all anymore. and 90% of that is during CFB season.I don't even watch movies often.
When I do watch TV, I prefer it to be something educational, and things about history,Civilization, and evolution are very interesting to me,because it is about The World, that I live in.
Anything about "outer space" I have a hard time being real interested in. I suppose that is because it seems far away from me, and even though I realize, that somehow everything in This Universe probably works together somehow, anything away from this planet, has nothing to do with me.
I have never even watched Star Wars.

I've watched a couple of episodes of the new Cosmos. I've been underwhelmed by it, honestly. Imo, there have been more recent shows the last few yrs on Science and Discovery channels that have been more informative that didn't choose to push a certain agenda like this new series has.

It's probably pretty good for a science show. It's been pretty average versus the competition.

I think whatever agenda you feel it's pushing is your own doing.

I rarely watch TV outside of sports, and when I do it's hard to find anything with much educational, or even thought provoking, material. The most thought provoking show I watch with regularity is Vice on HBO.

The Cosmos thing is half educational.

You're not going to get much true education on the tv.

Some people just don't like educational tv. It's as simple as that. They'd rather watch trash like Real Housewives or that show about the Kardashians.

I, personally, watch tons of documentaries. I don't watch much tv besides three or four shows and sports and almost everything else I watch is on Netflix.

I'll definitely catch Cosmos when I see it on Netflix or on Xfinity On Demand. Looks pretty interesting.

Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman. Best Science show out there IMO. Also, Beyond the Wormhole, is almost as good.

Have enjoyed watching many of these episodes. Was wary about being one sided when told about them, but did some research on the first episode I watched and so far, the documentaries I've watched have been pretty spot on and fair in their presentations. Definitely one of the best series on out there.

Not really. I watch a lot of shows on Science and Discovery and enjoy Dr. Kaku when he's on them. Those shows let science stand on its own merits, without involving religion or religious debate. Cosmos does itself a big disservice in trying to address non scientific issues in it's program. Calling students of some of the scientists.. disciples, is a bit out there as well.

Enjoy those, along with How the Universe was made, how the Universe works as well. There's a lot of good quality shows out there and better than this new series, imo. Not saying Cosmos is bad. It's just, to me... meh compared to the others.

They have some pretty wild documentaries on their website and Youtube channel. One where they infiltrated a North Korean logging camp in Siberia is pretty crazy. One about the Mormons in Mexico fighting with local drug cartels, and the Romney connection is another good one. It's amazing how they're able to get access to some places.

Maybe I shouldn't have focused so much on Cosmos, my question was more anything educational on tv. Documentaries about history, science, mathematics, space, sociology, etc. the history channel, discovery channel, and the learning channel have pretty much become the reality show channels. And that's really sad.
