It's a god damn sitcom, I want some fricking smart humor not social change.

It's possible to have both. South Park is the most effective modern comedy that depends heavily on social commentary to entertain. Do you like that show?

All in the Family was the first mainstream sitcom to use that topic for comedic effect. It was shocking to most but refreshing to many.

Millennial checking in who doesn't like Big Bang.

Don't really watch sitcoms now.

The ones that I remember watching a lot of when I was younger.

That 70s, Growing Pains, Wonder Years, Fresh Prince, I love Lucy, Gilligan.

I do enjoy South Park, but I don't think it effects change. Nor do I want it to.

I enjoy the fact that it makes light of social issues, and makes us all realize how stupid we are for caring about the things we care about.

It will never change the world though.

Shows like South Park and All In the Family make it easier to talk about things that might be uncomfortable to talk about.

However, they don't change anything.

Maybe a jumpstart to change. But specific change based on a sitcom should not and will not ever happen.

I think I may have talked over myself here, but frick it. I'm a few beers deep. Take it as you will.

You should probably watch mindless sitcoms every now and then.

It might even you out.

A ship, even a massive conspiracy laden ship like the one you choose to captain, must have an even keel.

It will sink without perspective.

I used to call myself a libertarian but I think my economic views have evolved beyond the conservative talk radio oversimplification of "free market" rabble rabble. I just hate corporatism and big business anti-competitive movements. I don't see how that's controlled without regulation and regulation is essentially not a libertarian ideal. Iunno. I need a new word for it.

I watch that 70s on nick at night every now and then.

Watch the old old ones online.

They're like heroin. Usually get the craving when I'm overworked.

And I have other mindless habits.

I don't do conspiracy stuff as much as some of you dingleberries probably think.

I'm cool w my level of keeldness.

Sheldon is excellent but the rest of the show sucks.

What made other sitcoms great were all of the characters, not just one character.

Just to use examples called out by others in the thread...

That 70's had Eric, Kelso, Red Forman, etc. All great characters.

Seinfeld had George, Elaine, Kramer, Steinbrenner, Soup Nazi, etc...

Rosanne had Rosanne, Jackie, Dan, David, Darlene, Becky, etc...

Simpsons had Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge, Grandpa, Moe, Mayor Quimby, Mr. Burns, Barney, Chief Wiggum, etc...

All Big Bang has is Sheldon. Great character, but without him the show is nothing.

Seinfeld is GOAT.

Any list that doesn't include All in the Family and Frasier is invalid

The characters on that show are so unremarkable that I don't even know who you're talking about. I legitimately never even smiled while watching that show. But yeah, all the good ones had a strong cast with awesome support characters.

I'm 27, but this is the correct answer, period. Laugh and cry, some of the best (if not the best overall) writing.

Mid to late nineties Simpsons is legit. Even into early aughts, good stuff.

BTW, your take on squirters, spot on.

Glad that we can find a common ground.

The first season of That 70s Show was greatness. I missed Lorrie when they switched her out. The humor was edgier and lots of more pot references in the first season.

I think Seinfeld is up there.

I thought the writing on 30 Rock was incredible.

I am currently into Community reruns until I get sick of it.
