I'm not even supporting a name change. I'm pointing out how it is a stupid name. It wasnt very well thought out.

Same thing I would think it was the San Francisco Slant Eyes or the San Antonio Wetbacks. There really is no difference between those 2 and Washington Redskins.

The whole point is that none of these team names have anything to do with the real issues the supposedly "offended" classes have to deal with.

As I've said, if you change the Redskins name, it's not going to make the folks on reservations any less dependent upon alcohol/government assistance, it just makes bringing up the point slightly more "racist."

There are real issues in every single segment of our population, eliminating the things that can be brought up by making them racist isn't the way to address anything.

Naming a team from Vegas the Las Vegas Negroes will never set the black community back a few steps, the opposite is true. It's a non-issue.

You ignored my response.

Perhaps it doesn't fit your agenda.

Yeah, It was a joke.

Cool thing about message boards is that you don't know if I'm white either, but I'm guessing by my defending what society has deemed "racist" you'll assume I am.

Why? Because only white dudes are racist.

Every Native American that I know, and I knew plenty growing up, weren't offended by the name. I'm not offended by the name, and I'm part Native American. My relatives are, and they're not offended. It seems to me that it's much ado about nothing. A bunch of overly sensitive people who are offended easily.

My grandmother was a die hard 'Skins fan until the day that she died, as was my dad. I am, many cousins and uncles are. We all have more Native American blood than most of the sensitive people crying for a change.

No, I'm pretty sure it's mostly full blooded Native Americans pushing for this change.

And I don't know about your family and friends. They must be in the 25% of Native Americans that don't find it offensive.

Honestly, the Redskins are a private business and they should be able to have the name frick Requiem For A Dawgs if they want to. I don't care. My whole point of replying is to point out that it is a stupid arse name. They have been around since 1932, so everyone is just used to it honestly.

Just because you want a team to keep the same name its had for 80+ years doesn't mean I think that your a racist. It's just your opinion.

Personally I never had a problem growing up with the term "Redskins" but I can see why people would want it change, and apparently some Native Americans DO want it changed:

The name debate heated up in 1992, when Washington made it to the Super Bowl against the Buffalo Bills. The game was held in Minnesota, which has the nation’s largest Native American population. Prior to the game, more than 2,000 Native Americans stood outside the stadium and protested with signs that read, “we are not mascots,” and, “promote sports not racism.” The American Indian Movement along with the National Congress of American Indians sponsored the protest. Shortly afterwards, the court case to cancel the trademarks used by the team began. [61] The team continues to receive attention as the more egregious example.[62] A bill was introduced in the US House of Representatives on March 20, 2013 to void any use of the name as a trademark. The primary sponsor, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D., D.C.), stated she supports the local team but not the name.[63] In April 2013 a member of the DC City Counsel, David Grosso proposed a non-binding resolution to change the name because the current name is “a derogatory, racist name.” [64]

Now we all know that is not true.

No, it's just the powers that be in American society.

There isn't a majority of people that care, and those that do make money by claiming shite is offensive.

Look at Reverend Al. He's got millions and a whole television hook up from being offended. He's a trailblazer.

Wrong.

Actual Native American here (ok fine 1\4 my grandmother was 100% Huron). The name is a racial slur used to put down Native Americans for centuries. It would be no different if there was a team named the Niggers. People would be rightfully offended by racially charged nature of the name and want it changed.

I tell everyone here when a NFL or NBA team gets named the Niggers, a MLB team gets named the Wetbacks, a team from any of the 4 major sports in California gets named the Chinks, and a NFL or NHL team get named the Nazis or Klansmen I will stop caring about this debate and agree Washington can keep its name but not before.
So yeah get those other teams to change there names as outlined above and the demand for Washington to have a name changed by everyone will go way down I promise you.

Good. At this point it doesn't need to be. No more than the Seminoles at Florida State or the Indians at Cleveland.

Yep, thanks Washington for butting your nose yet again into politically correct bullshite that doesn't matter. Not only are you overstepping your legal boundaries, but you're trying to get brownie points with black voters in order to get reelected.

And I can understand this. Its not his job to help out the community and the real problems they have. His job is to simply get reelected, and the best way to do that is to make sure his voters feel good about themselves and proud, not actually addressing and solving their damn problems, because that could lead to controversy, and thus not getting reelected. Really great how politicians think their only job is getting reelected.

And yeah, god bless the owner of the Redskins for not giving into the politically correct bullshite and standing up for himself in what might be an unpopular opinion by the liberal wusses around Washington.

Well she is in the minority. Every time Native Americans are polled the numbers are between 70-80% offended by the name.

Those polls are skewed and you know it.

I remember a few years back about a big uproar about FSU being called the Seminoles, and it kept on and kept on until a spokesman (might have been the chief) of the Seminole tribe had to issue a statement saying that they had ZERO problems with FSU being nicknamed the Seminoles.
