Great movie. Well done Disney.
Greatest race horse ever. Ive read Secretariat's hindquarters were the main source of his power, with a sloped croup that extended the length of his femur. When in full stride, his hind legs were able to reach far under himself, increasing his drive. His ample girth, long back and well-made neck all contributed to his heart-lung efficiency.

The manner in which Secretariat's body parts fit together determined the efficiency of his stride, which affected his acceleration and endurance.

No horse since has been able to do what he did.

Some would say that it was because of he had a big heart which made him run so fast for great distances. No, it was because he was fast as shite. Go Big Red!

I thought the movie was done poorly.

I will always say that while the Belmont gets all of that attention for what he did to the field (and Sham, who would be a triple crown winner in any other year), what always amazed me most was his move after breaking last in the Preakness (same as he did in the derby) and when he reached the first turn in last, against fresh horses, he emerged from that turn in first place and blazed to the finish.

Unbelievable.

We would talk about a sport with South Carolina ties, but there aren't any.

Not really

Leave it to Disney to turn a good story to crap trying to use formula to appeal to the masses. I did a bit of time on that movie as consultant to making it factual and Disney turned it to something for the masses and deleted much of the facts.

Possibly, but a genetic abnormality contributed greatly to the success. This genetic abnormality was not passed to any of his many offspring. While the horse was capable of above average performance the real key was a heart roughly 1.5x to 2.0x the norm. This allowed much greater "horsepower" akin to putting in a much larger engine than allowed in say a NASCAR race.

Generally when a horse has a genetic advantage they are "handicapped" by having to carry more weight in a race to make the races more competitive. It was not fully know about Big Red until after his death when the horse is "buried". They do not generally bury an entire horse but just parts of them. If the heart is removed for burial you could notice the size abnormality.

Not to belabor the obvious but it was his big heart that made him fast. Similar to when John Dodd took a engine from a Spitfire aircraft and plopped it into a Rolls Royce body. Aside from getting about 2 miles to the gallon it could easily pass everything else on the German autobahn Mash here for The Beast (not the original tho.

Part was they started filming places like Keeneland that looked good but finished filming at tracks in Louisiana and with lesser staff. Makes it look choppy and some scenes the camera work is not great.

Sometimes it is the little things like using incorrect silks in favor of historical silks because Disney like certain colors better. Also, they made Penny about 10 to 15 years younger as pretty sure the kids were already grown when Secretariat ran. Makes me think those supporting shots were made up to let Disney capture a younger market at the box office and to give them casting space for a talent they wanted to promote.

I hung out with Bill, Ron, and Eddie on set and enjoyed my time with them but it was pretty clear early on Disney was not concerned with making a "historical" movie.
