Ring as a graduation present??

I just saw a Facebook post where a chick just got an engagement style ring as a graduation present from her MOM. She says in the post "Atleast I'll have a ring until i get THE ring." This is so stupid to me. Why would you a 5K plus engagement ring as a graduation present when youre not even getting married? People amaze me
