I usually read one book per month. I am currently reading work from sci-fi writer Jack McDevitt. I read "the hercules text" last month and this month I am reading "chindi". It has plenty about astronomy, alien civilizations, future technology and starships in general. Love his work and recommend it.
So what do you recommend? My wife bought me a Clancy novel for my birthday but I give it up after 100 pages. Couldn't get into it. I am an Army vet and am interested in that type stuff so it surprised me that I am not a fan.
Sorry if this thread has been done a few hundred times.

It is and forever will be the best series I've ever read. There's 7 books in the series.
They're making a movie about it in the next year or so, so you can get in on the ground floor or not. For the record I'm a pretty big Stephen King fan. It's got a whole lot of fantasy in it but alot of it is set in New York also. There's time travel/alternate realities/apocalyptic cities. It's got it all. I think you'd probably dig it Data.

I've been enjoying the Penn cage series by Greg Iles lately. Just wrapped up the Natchez burning saga but I've enjoyed the devils punchbowl as well.

I read many, King, Clancy a few others. My favorite is Patterson. My son started reading the Bill O'Reilly "killing" series. That got me to give them a go, very good history reads.

I just don't like King (I know I'm in the minority).

Never tried it but after researching the gunslinger that the Ark fan cited I think I may give it a go.

You may be in the minority, but you're not alone in that.

Clive Cussler
Jeffery Deaver
Ken Follett

Try Malazan book of the fallen
Interesting fantasy series that is centered around an army scene for the most part. A favorite of mine

And when u say fantasy I mean completely different world building, magic, gods, immortals but the Malazan empire, a human empire, at the center and mostly following their armies in their travels.

He's a good storyteller, but an average, at best, writer. Never been a fan of his character development. And several of his books I've read have pretty gaping plot holes.
Not really knocking him. I've enjoyed several of his books. He's just never wowed me.

One author I've seriously come to love is Brandon Sanderson. If you're a fan of fantasy novels and don't mind picking up some lighter prose, you might really like his stuff. My favorite material of his right now is the Stormlight Archive series - book three is scheduled for release in October. He's one author who treats his craft like a job, much like Steven King. He pumps books out at an almost inhuman pace, while still somehow maintaining a stellar level of quality.
I should mention that while his prose is very transparent, his stories are by no means simplistic. Check him out if you have a love for all things fantasy!
Beyond that I've been going back and rereading all of Asimov's material and Herbert's Dune books. Once I finish rereading all of those old favorites I will really need to find the next big thing. Life is empty without a good book to read.
ETA: American Gods is a really good one, too. I think they're even adapting it into a TV series now.

If you have a year to drain, the Wheel of time series is a very good fantasy series. World is similar to a Lord of the Rings setting (i.e. swords, magic, etc.). 14 books in total, first 11 written by Robert Jordan and the final 3 written by Branden Sanderson after Jordan's death. Great story telling and tons of characters/plot lines to follow that keep you coming back for more.

Have you read Killing the Rising Sun yet? IMO the best in the series thus far. He has a new one coming out, but the name escapes me.

I like sci-if movies but I stick to sci-fact for reading. My favorite author is Brian Greene. I'm currently reading his The Hidden Reality.
I also like Eric Smith. I'm reading Inevitable Life. It's a ground breaking look at how life arises as an agent of metabolism in an active geosphere.

Just got this tonight: Hero of the Empire by Candice Millard
It is about Churchill, the Boer War, and his rise. Churchill is absolutely fascinating.

If y'all like fantasy, lord of the rings type, check out the Elric of Melniboné saga by Michael Morrecock.
