Some Mexicans that work for my dad in Memphis hate black folks more than anyone I know.
They hate them because black criminals would rob them every now and then because they know Mexicans usually carry cash.

If you feel the need to defend a racist video because you were in a fraternity, maybe it's time to mentally let the fraternity go.

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how you're drawing a comparison about people being upset about a racist video to the US not being able to defend itself in the future.

It's a bunch of rich white dweebs being try-hards, which the Greek system is a haven for. It gets solved when frats get bonus points for diversity. Meaning the national chapters make Ole Miss frats put black guys in. I know that's going to offend some of y'all, but that's about to happen. That Alabama sorority not letting that black girl in a couple years ago is a perfect example of how the Greek system needs to change and the old argument of "it won't because old Greeks run shite" isn't true any more. Their "influence" is minimal at best and means almost nothing now with the power of social media spreading their dirty little secrets.

Because he's the exactly the kind of try-hard dweeb that would have sung this song and thought he was cool, and his stance in this rests of his insecurity of being a try-hard loser, so he deflects it in to others. I've scanned most of this thread and am not going to respond to all of it, but I do have some general comments. For context, I went to a small school with deeply ingrained southern roots and tradition and a massive Greek system. That school had made major strides in academic prestige in the last twenty or so years. My fraternity was comprised mainly of white kids from various southern cities and towns. Anyway, my thoughts based on personal experience:
1) frick these kids. They should be punished severely for being so stupid and allowing this to go on.
2) This kind of attitude is not totally uncommon, but I've never seen anything like this is a group setting. I had friends who said some things that made you say "woah there," but never anything this overtly hateful. They generally realized on their own that that crap was wrong, and nobody thought they were cool for saying it.
3) I think OBReb is right about how something like this would have started. This chant has probably been around for 100 years. What's shocking is that at no point did a group of upperclassmen put an end to it.
4) I actually found the racist stuff to be more common among alums than students. We had alums who were extremely upset when they found out we were rushing a couple black kids, even threatening to stop donating. I had one drunk alum (probably 50-60 years old) at a Homecoming event actually walk up while I was talking to one of those guys and offer to donate $10K to the fraternity if we'd stop rushing him, all while he was standing right there. I tried to play it off as a joke, and I think the kid thought that's what it was. The amount was probably drunkenly overstated, but the message definitely wasn't a joke.
I only tell that story to say that there might be a similar culture happening with this chapter, but they've just bought into it. This stuff doesn't start with the kids in the video, but that obviously doesn't excuse them.

Those trying to keep blacks out of Alabama sororities last year were primarily the alums. Many of the students wanted them in but the alums said no, according to reports. Of course, the university stepped up and told the alums where to go.
