My vice is unhealthy eating and Diet Coke. Sounds pathetic compared to nicotine and narcotics, I know, but I do struggle with it. I need to lose about 50-60 lbs and get back down to 215-220. It’s just so simple to grab something on the go and say frick working out, rather than living healthy.
Its really hard, especially once you reach middle age, to shed pounds. Your body will fight you tooth and nail to keep those pounds because we evolved as a species where every calorie is wonderful.
I need to lose weight too. I fear the both of us are going to have to slowly take it off a few pounds here, and few pounds there, and work at it.

Yeah it’s miserable.
I went from being 210-220 at 26 and I could regulate it easily.
It was early in my farming career and I was still having to do some grunt work. My daily routine was two eggs and sausage for breakfast, work, whatever for lunch, work, only ate supper if I had supper with friends. Otherwise, being a bachelor, I would go home and have a couple drinks and go to bed. Never ate much bread or many sweets. If I did eat supper alone, I’d just cook myself a chicken breast or steak and not eat any sides. The only time I drank a carbonated drink was with alcohol. But I didn’t have an alcohol problem. 2 drinks a night usually.
Then I became more of the shot caller on the farm and met my wife at the same time. Turned into less hard work, more suppers. Then I broke my leg, didn’t walk without crutches or a cane for 3 months, then the second surgery and didn’t change my diet.
And now here I am at 31. I’ve tried going back to my old “diet” and it doesn’t work like it used to. Though I have to admit, I’m not giving it a fair shake when I try it. I fear I’m going to have to start working out. I still can’t walk more than a mile or so without having my limp come back and just being worn out and sore as shite. So, I’m trying to decide if I’m going to get a stationary bike or a rowing machine and start working out every morning doing something that’s low impact. I need to do it, and plan to when I’m done with the farm for the year.
As long as I see results when I step on the scales, I can stay motivated to do it.

Your metabolism slows down to a crawl when you hit the big 3-0.
If you had not broken your leg then you'd probably be fine but if I had bought 100000 shares of Domino's Pizza when they were giving them away for free I'd be rich off my butt. Things happen and they usually don't happen for the best.
I would go with a stationary bike, it won't give you an upper body workout but might be easier on your bad leg. Start with low resistance and then build up.
Also I wouldn't cut back your diet that much. When you suddenly go to "I'm not getting as many calories as I used to" then your body goes into we are starving mode and its almost impossible to shed weight. Sure, you will lose weight if you spend more calories then you intake, but you want to gradually knock that weight off a pound here, or a pound there and get back down without starving yourself and being miserable.

Do you have access to an indoor pool at a Y or some type of facility?
When I recovered from my last surgery, I started off doing physical therapy in a hydro pool and then did quite a bit of distance swimming.
Walking distance might be difficult, but you don't have to go for a run. Be relaxed and go for a walk everyday.

Yeah, I’m not going back to my old diet. That wasn’t healthy. It’s just what I did. Just going to cut out as much bread, sweets, and carbonated drinks as I can stand and lighten up at supper time.
I was leaning towards the bike, and I should clarify on the bad leg. If you didn’t know me, you would never know it. I walk normally. I just lead with the opposite leg. I don’t have the endurance I used to and it starts showing its weakness as I get tired.

I have an alcohol problem. I used to drink a 12 pack a day and a couple of cases on the weekend, plus I drank a lot of whiskey and vodka. I narrowed it down to nothing for a couple of years but my nerves started back up and I drink less but instead of domestic, I drink craft beers which is much worse really.

DIet Coke - drink up to 12 a day.

Diet Coke isn't bad for you.
It is more of a money issue, rather than a health issue.
Putting CO2 in water costs money, and therefore, you have to pay for it...which is cheap to begin with, but adds up compared to just not buying it.
Putting sugar in carbonated water is another issue altogether.

Why?
Is it a better taste so you drink more?
Certain bourbons taste better so I drink more of them when possible.
I know part of my affinity for moonshine is the locals use in season ingredients so now they are doing pumpkin and I love that stuff. In the summer and early fall those rascals use blackberries and peaches.
I know I am not a full blown alcoholic because I can turn down Budweiser easily.

They do taste better. I only say they are worse because they generally have more alcohol per volume than domestic beers so when I drink them, I reach that tipsy state quicker and more times than not I drink way too many. Beer to me is like most who eat chips, I can't have just one.

One is never enough and two is too many as the saying goes. I'm very similar in that I can easily sit back and drink a 12 pack without batting an eye.
I can, and have, drank more then that at times. I tip the scales at 275 pounds and I'm Irish. I can drink Grey Whales under the table.
I don't want to give up drinking entirely, but I do know I need to scale back so when I drink now as soon as I reach that point where I know I'm a little bit tipsy I stop. Which isn't always the easiest thing in the world to do I admit.
Good luck to you!

Probably true, Canadiens mix a light drink then stop at two. The way many Americans were in the 1950's when you had nightly cocktails with your neighbors. Now we have no peer socialization and drink the whole bottle by ourselves. Another time they have fed the "I" at the expense of the "WE".
I can keep beer in check, tequila is my danger drink.

We all have a vice that is hard to keep in check. Tequila probably wouldn't be mine since unless its top notch stuff it tends to taste like pure evil.

Thanks, like today I finished off a six pack of fat tire and finishing a six pack of Guinness extra stout. I just need it.

Just start tapering it off a little at a time. I'm here for your bro.

I know exactly what you are going through and unfortunately, I quit cold turkey and it was the worst 2 weeks of my life.
I'd SERIOUSLY consider cannabis. It's proven to help addicts taper down.
If you want to talk, let me know.

When updating my OP, I noticed most of us have the same group of addictions. Hope everybody on here can post where they are "right now" - number of beers, current weight, amount of phone time, etc.
That will help motivate you, I promise.

I was going to suggest cannabis but it could give him increased anxiety during that process.
