In that defense -- Arabs/Muslims in that part of the world have been known for being bitches when in uniform. Some of the worst U.S. losses in both theaters (or the unified ME theater) have been because their Afghani/Iraqi forces surrendered right away.
That being said: The surrender on the scale that it happened could have never been predicted. They had weapons, numbers and technology to sustain defensive positions and simply didn't.

Doesn't matter how we relate to Assad. He's a dead man walking.
I think our intelligence agencies and military don't have a lot of faith in the Syrian opposition to Assad. We've been played by too many groups in the Middle East.
Yeah we've only been giving the FSA anti-tank and some anti-aircraft capacity -- we haven't been full out arming them like other groups in the past.

Also with this: ISIS is getting dangerously close.

There's something different about ISIS. We've been bombing the hell out of them for a few weeks in Iraq and they're still standing. Their resilience is disturbing.

They've also taken some seriously well-defensible points with relatively few numbers. I'm suspecting that a lot of those had to be inside jobs or something similar to that, because there are times when 800 go up against something like 40 of them and they win.
Almost makes you wonder if God is on someone's side.
