this is why my son won't be allowed to play football.

i am a fan of watching it, but the (potential) reward to him isn't worth the risks. not just the risks inherent to the sport, but the risks brought on by stupid people who don't know when to make a kid sit.

he can choose just about any other sport.

(and yes, i will put my foot down. he'll deal with it)

Saying that THIS is why you don't want your son to play football doesnt make much sense. Per 100,000 participants, high school football has a lower death rate than hockey, gymnastics, lacrosse and baseball, and much lower than competitive skiing.

At least tell him the truth when you put your foot down.

Surely we can get regular or even retired MDs. that would be more than happy to check things out. I doubt k-12 schools would even have to hire them -- community members would volunteer.

That said, the fact that you could do that with a broken collarbone is actually incredibly rare.

Hell, the high school I went to was tiny, 4A at the time in Alabama (only had 33 people on the team), and we had two MD's on the sideline every game. This was back in the late 80's, early 90's before CTE was even a thing.

That's alot of liability for the doctor, and I don't think their insurance covers them outside of their workplace

Couldn't that be solved with the school's insurance/waivers. Surely something could be worked out.

Sophomore player Dennis Mitchell got hurt,

This tells us absolutely nothing. Head injury? Second impact syndrome? Irresponsible reporting IMO. Case Keenum threw up all over Alabama's field when Houston played Alabama years ago. That happens.

Im betting the kid had a heart issue that was unknown. Ill wait to pass judgement on the coach after we hear concrete details.

How many thousands of kids threw up Friday during a game and went back in and were fine.

Turns out he actually overdosed on cocaine. Investigators just had the entire team drug tested.

Or just an unfunny joke?

The Coahoma County coroner’s office is disputing the account of Dennis Mitchell’s family, which claims the Byhalia High School football player died Friday night after re-entering the game following the initial signs of injury. Coahoma County Coroner Scotty Meredith said Tuesday that Mitchell collapsed on the sideline after leaving the game, contrary to media reports that stated Mitchell collapsed while playing. Meredith also said coaches did not allow Mitchell to return to the game after showing symptoms.
