Missourians - Question about "Ozark". Is it culturally accurate?

I have never been to that part of MO. The show seems to paint south-central Missouri as "too Southern" most of the time, in my opinion. I realize some of this is due to it being mostly filmed in Georgia (which is a mistake, because there aren't that many pine trees or red dirt in the Ozarks).

What do you think about the show's cultural accuracy?

I think it is a great show.

They do in the southeastern part of the state. I don’t believe that they do in the area where this is set-Lake of the Ozarks-which is closer to central MO.

No-it’s not culturally accurate. There are backwoods folks in MO just like there are anywhere else, but Lake of the Ozarks is a pretty well-developed area.

I could see it to a limited degree. There is, though its dying out, an Ozark country AF accent. You can still hear it from some of the folks whose families have lived in the area for generations in NW Arkansas for example.

That having been said, having seen Ozark, which is a great show, they go too Southern. Ozark accents and culture is different from the South, particularly the Deep South like Georgia.

I personally believe southern accents are just dying as it is.
You can see it on this website. And I’m not saying i hear them talk but you can just tell, more and more people use the term “you guys”
Also see it more and more in the professional world, people born and raised in the south without the accent

I have to agree with you on that one.

There are different parts to the Lake of the Ozarks. It's a big arse lake with tons of shore line. The part of the Lake that most people think of is relatively developed and geared towards the weekend tourist. We used to have a place down there and it's close enough to St. Louis for a weekend get away. Boats got too big for the lake and we were having to spend too much money replacing floats and sea walls every year to keep our condo from crumbling into the lake.

With it being as vast as it is, there are certainly parts that are pretty damn close to what you see in the show. I never considered it southern, just hillbilly and clannish. Some good people. Some meth addicts. Some in between.

I haven't watched season 3 so not sure how they're portraying it now but the first two was close.

And I’m not saying everyone’s developing a northern accent either
Unless you call something that isn’t southern as northern, i feel like more and more people are having neutral accents. Guess it’s pretty much what you see in Maryland

I don’t see it at all

No not even close.
You can tell a midwestern accent very easily. It’s kind of like British and Australian.
Similar but different
I think of Ohio as the “Australian” version of a Canadian accent

I guess maybe it’s just nothing to compare to now days. Just a pretty neutral accent with no dialects

Not from Missouri, and I haven't seen any of Ozark, but have seen Winter's Bone. Was kind of surprised by that depiction.

Cool. I find the Jacob Snell character accent believable as an Ozarks accent, but suuuper country old-school hillbilly.

There are some downright drawwwllls on the show that just strike me as trying way too hard, or coming from casting being most in Georgia.

That's the case with every show that tries to depict somthing outside the coasts. Hit or miss.

I think the show depicts that "lake culture" in the Ozarks pretty well, as there are absolute palaces in some areas, and trailers and cabins in others.

I wish they filmed it on location. Every shot full of pine trees and red dirt snaps me out of the vibe. Most of the stands of pine around here have been planted. Limestone and deciduous trees, please.

I don’t think this matters
Most of the cast that have southern accents in the show are from the north
They’re jus trying way too hard

I live on the lake where this is filmed. Ruth's accent is horrible. Great show though. Kind of cool it's filmed in my backyard.

Correct, it's all filmed on Lake Allatoona in Georgia. And Ruth's accent is perfect (even though she's not from around here, she's very gifted, and nails it.)

I say this on the authority that I was born and raised there. literally on the banks of the creek that form that lake, and for which the lake is named.

Where are you from originally?

In the 1980's most of the lake's shoreline actually was just camps and trailer parks, very much like the mini-park depicted in Ozark where Ruth lives. Today it's all high dollar lakefront property and very few of the trailer parks still exist. The state took alot of the land on the north side of the lake and made it WMA land, and the south side of the lake had most of the trailer parks, but that's all million dollar houses now.

So Ruth’s accent is a perfect Georgia one
Not a Missouri one?

For the area of Georgia they are filming, yes.

For Missouri, I have no idea. Probably not.
