Looking for a place in Mobile

I've posted here before and got some good advice about where to live in Mobile. But so far I've not come up with much.
I'm a 24 year old guy moving to Mobile within the next month for a new job. Any suggestions on apartments or anyone from the Mobile area and know of houses to rent? Trulia isn't giving to many great options

Fairhope is a real nice area.

Look towards West Mobile or areas such as Saraland or Semmes. If you want to stay directly in the City, avoid the north side (Toulminville, Chricton, etc) and the Mid City area (Down the Bay, Maysville, etc.)

I was told the West Mobile area was more family oriented and the younger crowd has went more towards Mid town and downtown. I was there last weekend and drove around but nothing just struck me as a cool place to live. All the apartment complexes suck

Pritchard looks like an awesome place to live. I mean having my truck broken into on the daily would be awesome

Lived in West Mobile close to the University for two years. It's a nice area, but I wouldn't go back and live in Mobile even if someone paid me.

Does anyone know about Midtown Oaks Townhouses off of Dauphin Street? I toured a couple units last weekend. It didn't seem bad location or price wise but maybe some of you with a little more knowledge of the area could help me out.

I can't remember much ghetto around Dauphin and anywhere on it is good location wise for getting around town. I'd do it.

For 24 y/o single guy, I would say to rent a house in Midtown, but some streets can be really shady in Midtown. The nicer ones are close to Murphy High School or by McGill Toolen. Stay away from going too far toward Broad St. Or too far north (toward Prichard).
Another option is an apartment, but I've heard there is an apartment shortage, so that might require a broader radius. There are nice apartments everywhere, but you will generally find them like this:
Midtown- older apartments that have charm to them, but might have some things you have to look past. These are usually the cheaper option.
Spring Hill / USA - these will mostly be geared toward college students. Spring Hill is the nicest section of town, but again, there won't be many of your non-students living in an apt in Spring Hill.
West Mobile - these will probably be newer apartments, but it might be a little far from everything you'll want to do, like work and bars, etc. it's grown a lot out there lately though and mobile is still small enough you can comfortably drive anywhere.
Downtown - this would be my pick if i were in your place. You can find a fixed up apartment in a gated building and be in the middle of everything. You will have a blast being able to walk to all of the dauphin st bars and restaurants. Mardi Gras would be amazing there. You'll have to deal with a little "culture" but be careful and select a nice place and it would probably be a lot of fun.
ETA: I forgot to mention Eastern Shore. It is a great life over there. I have split my time between the 2 (mobile and eastern shore) my whole life and just recently moved back to Fairhope. It can be a hassle driving over the bay everyday, but living in that area is very nice.

Never lived in Mobile, but did date a couple of girls from there and spent a good bit of time in the area.
One lived in Semmes. At that time it was still somewhat "country"; a lot of land, several people had horses, etc. Seemed very white, middle class/upper middle class. I know that within the last few years they have incorporated as a city and so things may be different there.
The other lived in an apartment on South Catherine (between Dauphin and Government/two blocks or so from McGill Toolen). The "apartment" was the lower floor of an older two story house. It was pretty nice. There was an apartment complex a little closer to Government that looked a little shady, but she never had any issues with people that lived there. Very easy access to downtown, not too difficult to get over toward USA either.

I appreciate all the help. I found a couple of ok apartments in midtown when I was down there a week ago. I've tried to use Trulia to find houses in those areas but nothing just strikes me as nice enough for some of those prices.
The Eastern Shore is very nice. After going back and forth to Orange Beach everyday last year from Mobile I ended up hating that drive over the Bay. After a few years I can see myself heading that way though.

Other than using Trulia how else can I find out about them? I'm in Oxford and can't keep driving to Mobile every weekend.
