My current job will be ending in a couple of months and I may have an opportunity to stay with the company I have been with for 14 years and move to Austin. Otherwise I am looking for new employment in KC.

Talk me in or out of moving to Austin.

If it is a decent paying job, Austin is a cool place to live. Everyone I know from there loves it

I currently live in KC MO, in the Brookside area, just south of the Plaza. I work near the Sports Complex.....about a 10 to 15 minute drive to work.

It would be the same basic job I do now at the same pay.

Dammit Randy. Some people live outside the Internet.

Austin is full of Texans. Stay in Missouri.

I think you have to consider whether you're willing to uproot relationships lose contact with others.

The biggest mistake I made was leaving SMS because I lost my connections and support system. I struggled blending in to MS culture until Stephen Peterman's dad introduced me to some locals.

I personally wouldn't like to be in either, but the only thing I can come up with that KC has that Austin doesn't is pro sports teams. Austin does have a shitload of hipsters and other annoying people

I am in my mid 50s, not married and never really considered moving out of the area but, the older I get the more I think about moving, particularly to the warmer climate.

I have one adult son who will likely be getting married soon and another son about to turn 20 that lives with me...haven't said anything to him yet about the move. Don't know if we would want to move or stay with his mother.

Okay, so this is a serious thread.

There are worse places to move than Austin. However, there's a lot better. Have you considered applying for positions in other places?

The big battle is really the decision to move from your home. Once that decision is made, the options are endless.

I think you should check COL and other things. The move won't be traumatic but the loss of comfort may be.

I've only been on the site for about a year and haven't figured out just yet where the serious threads should go

But yes, it is a serious thread.

With the attachments you have to KC, I'd recommend staying there. Besides, the only people that tend to consider Austin "great" are people from the ages 25-35. It's a hipster paradise and there are some real weirdos there. If you do want to move somewhere warmer, I'd look in Florida. The real estate there is relatively cheap at the moment.

I like Austin, but I'm 24. I like going to bars and getting wasted, floating the river, going to Lake Travis, etc. It depends what you like to do... the Hill Country is beautiful.

>implies there's a place for serious threads on SECr.

In reality, what I said is the best advice I can give. Once you've made the decision to potentially leave your home city/home it's all about picking the best place.
